Below is a complete archive of all the news stories we've ever posted, broken down by month. Apologies for any missing pictures - the recent host change has seen a few images go walkabout. As I come across them, I'll find them and reinsert them. But I'm sure you'd rather I worked on the all new site than recover 7 year old images.
Musikmesse 2011: Pioneer DJM-T1 walkthrough
Posted by Gizmo on April 22, 2011
Musikmesse 2011 might be over, but we've still got some solid footage for you to chew over. First up is a 10 minute walkthrough of one of the hottest products at the show. The DJM-T1 is a full frontal assault aimed at ousting Rane's TTM57SL from the 2 channel DVS mixer throne. DJ Pegasus captured Pioneer's Rik Parkinson in a 3 camera demo, that also features cameos from other DJ industry types.
JOBS: Numark want you!
Posted by Gizmo on April 21, 2011
Finding a job in the DJ industry isn't easy. It's considerably smaller than you might think and scattered across the entire globe. So picking up your local paper to see a such a job advertised isn't going to happen too often. Thus Numark are making a bid to grab your attention with a job fair.
DEMO: M-Rode on the Mixvibes U-Mix Control Pro
Posted by Gizmo on April 20, 2011
A picture paints a thousand words, and a video demo probably does exactly the same thing, which would explain why they usually generate more discussion that most stories I post. This week, MixVibes have knocked out a tasty video for their all new U-Mix Control Pro MIDI controller. but this time, French turntablist and beatmaker M-Rode grapples with the U-Mix Control Pro and wins.
DEMO: DJ Cerla on the Numark NS6
Posted by Gizmo on April 18, 2011
Given the slightly contentious nature of the previous post, where I floated the idea that 4 channels might not be for everyone and that it might be an idea to go back to your 2 decks and make them work better before assuming that 4 decks is the answer to your lack of skills, DJ Cerla comes along with a perfect example of kicking ITCHy sanding my journo face with his own brilliant demo of Numark's soon to be released NS6.
4 is the magic number - or is it?
Posted by Gizmo on April 15, 2011
The last year or so has seen the DJ world whipped up into a frenzy by the apparent demand for 4 decks. I'm not exactly sure where this has come from - has the consumer been making noises because of Traktor's ability to handle 4 decks, or have manufacturers run out of ideas so decided that we absolutely needed to replace our existing gear with twice as much of the same product but in a single bigger box? But this 4 x Contour setup on the Reloop stand brought a question that I've asked previously on Twitter to the front of my mind. Are we happy with 2 actual decks being fudged to handle 4 channels, or do we really want 4 physical decks?
Musikmesse 2011: UDG
UDG have been making bags for years. It all started out from a record shop when someone needed a bag to carry vinyl around. But how times have changed. If DJs carry vinyl around, it's likely be just 2 pieces, in the same bag as their laptop and assorted audio accessories. Thus UDG have now got a much expanded marketplace in which to push their gear. We got a look at their range as well as a few very controller specific bags.
Messy Juggling on the Stanton SCS.4DJ
It's quick, messy and probably the worst demo you'll see in all of tradeshowdom. But my sidekick DJ Pegasus decided to thrust a camera at me while I messed around with a sample on the all new Stanton SCS.4DJ. I literally walked up and had a go. The result is what you see here.
Musikmesse 2011: Decksavers
There are times when news stories about new gear are somewhat less laden with buzzwords and new tech than many would like. Such is the way of Decksaver posts. It is of course interesting for those who own gear that Decksavers aim to... umm... save, so this post is as ever simply an update as to what is getting saved this time.
Musikmesse 2011: DJ Tech
You can always depend on DJ Tech to bring a few leftfield ideas to market. Thankfully they also have products that appeal to a broader section of the buying public. They had a few new bits and bobs at Musikmesse. And as ever it was a weird and wonderful eclectic mix of unusual and really quite useful products.
Musikmesse 2011: Numark NS6
Posted by Gizmo on April 13, 2011
It's been a while since I was privvy to a world exclusive super secret peek at Numark's next ITCH based offering. And things really have changed since that day back in October, and the NS6 is just about ready for primetime. I got to touch it for the first time, and we also did a little filming too.
Musikmesse 2011: Zomo MC-1000
Posted by Gizmo on April 12, 2011
Zomo are a new name to most people - well those outside of Germany anyway. They haven't got the widest range, and what they have is more down the accessory route and usually rebadged OEM fodder. So to raise their profile, they've decided to make something very worthy of our attention. The MC-1000 is an interesting proposition - a basic 4 deck MIDI controller with a built in 4 channel audio interface.
Musikmesse 2011: MixVibes Cross v1.6
Posted by Gizmo on April 11, 2011
One of the key advantages of the digital age for DJs is having a much better way to organise the chaos that is an analogue record collection. Indeed it is my opinion that the ease of management of your collection can make or break a buying decision. So given that MixVibes have extensive experience in this area via their partnership with Pioneer, it comes as no surprise that elements of rekordbox will be filtering down into Cross v1.6.
Musikmesse 2011: Twitch and ITCH. A Film.
Posted by Gizmo on April 10, 2011
If you're one of the hep cats who follow me on the social media brilliance that is Twitter, you'll have been aware of my outstanding coup of actually getting 2 of Musikmesse's biggest DJ releases - Novation's Twitch and Serato's ITCH v2 - in the all too snug comfort of my hotel room on Wednesday evening. Those same people will also be aware of the utter failure of said evening to amount to anything more than a missed opportunity.
Musikmesse 2011: Gemini's Magic Touch
Posted by Gizmo on April 9, 2011
It's all too easy to criticise Gemini paying just a little too much homage to Pioneer's last set of CDJs. But it isn't anything that hasn't been done before by other manufacturers over the years - just perhaps a tad sooner than most would dare. But looking past this all too obvious fact, there is one stroke of genius in this CDJ-700 that whilst deliberate, could also be unintentionally clever.
Musikmesse 2011: Stanton SCS.4DJ Controller
Posted by Gizmo on April 8, 2011
Some feel that having to drag a laptop along to a gig is a right royal pain in the rectum. They get in the way, they crash and take your attention away from your core DJ gear. So it makes sense to have the not especially complex task of music management shoehorned into the body of the controller itself. And that's what Stanton's SCS.4DJ is all about. But wait... it's a MIDI controller as well? Double whammy.
SCOOP - New Pioneer product
Posted by Gizmo on April 7, 2011
At first, we thought the previously mentioned DJM-T1 was the only new Pioneer product to be released at Musikmesse. But despite them trying to be discrete about it, we managed to uncover the next generation of their DJ empire. If you look carefully, you'll just make it out...
Musikmesse 2011: Rane SL2
Posted by Gizmo on April 7, 2011
A quick MENSA test: SL1 __ SL3 SL4 - what's the missing number? Exactly. People have often pondered about what happened to the SL2 - not the old skool rave duo, but the missing link in the Rane audio interface range. Well it's here - no real surprises though. I got pictures and a wee bit of video though to keep people happy.
Musikmesse 2011: Pioneer DJM-T1
Even though the cat poked its head from the bag last week, the DJM-T1 didn't quite escape - until now. Spies on the Musikmesse show floor told me last night that my prediction was pretty much bang on, and this morning Pioneer have formally announced the aforementioned cat. The DJM-T1 is a 2 channel Traktor certified mixer, complete with a copy of Traktor Scratch DUO 2 and a heap of other stuff too.
Musikmesse 2011: Serato ITCH 2 Preview
Here's something that many people have been waiting, pining and hankering for. While NI's Traktor goes from strength to strength, users of Serato's ITCH controller product have been somewhat left in the dark about feature upgrades. Sure, every time a new controller comes out, ITCH jumps a version number, but this hasn't given users much in the way of promised goodies. But with every landmark release comes some new hotness, and the above video of ITCH v2 gives you an idea of where things are going - and that direction does seem to be right towards SSL.
Musikmesse 2011: Numark Mixdeck Quad
Numark and their assorted group companies usually go balls out and as good as own Musikmesse. This year however looks like being a much more sedate affair with just a handful of releases. The biggest thing for most people is the first actual public outing of the NS6 where actual music will come out of it. But there is one update that people should be interested in - Mixdeck hit the market as an all singing and dancing 2 channel jack of all trades controller. Now Mixdeck Quad climbs aboard the four channel gravy train, sings and dances some more and adds some more trades for good measure.
Musikmesse 2011: Novation Twitch
Posted by Gizmo on April 5, 2011
Last week saw a whatthehellisthat frenzy caused by Novation's teaser for their next DJ focussed product, followed by certain individuals pooling their hive minds to come up with an idea of what Novation's new thingy could possibly be. Well it's finally here and we pretty much nailed it - Twitch for ITCH (no I'm not kidding) dispenses with any kind of jog wheel or platter and focusses on new features in ITCH. Yes - I said Twitch and no jog wheels.
Leaving on a jet plane... for Musikmesse
Posted by Gizmo on April 5, 2011
That's me packed and ready to go. Traveling pretty light this year and leaving the Canon EOS 7D at home and putting my faith the small but perfectly formed Sony NEX-5. But fear not for I'm being shadowed closely by my wing man Sean, who is bringing a veritable video camera warehouse with him. And this year I have a new luggage companion as well in the shape of the UDG 21" Creator Trolley bag.
