Ortofon's Theory of Evolution

Ortofon Evolution headshell

Within reason, headshells are headshells are headshells and you're not likely to notice any difference in performance between each one with the same cart installed. But a little more choice in design would be nice - enter Ortofon's new Evolution headshell.

I did show you this before but it's the first time I've been able to play with them myself. They're certainly more aesthetically pleasing than a lot of carts, especially with the matching colour coded weight options.

I'm surprised that more companies haven't come out with headshell designs considering that the tonearm arm connector is one of the precious few standards in the DJ gear world. I look at other industries where there are a world of 3rd party add-ons that all plug and play together so why can't there be more choice for DJs? I'm making it a personal goal to help establish standards in things like fader stems, connectors, pot stem sizes etc etc so that on cap fits all and accessories can be swapped in and out without a problem - tonearms are another good example.

I'll be calling Ortofon's UK distributor to get a pair of these for a closer look. UK retailers are putting them out for £25 each or £49 a pair. Hey Ortofon - how about some in Black?

not shore about the aesthetically pleasing part, but it's nice that someone is making new stuff. i think it is a bit "fat", would be nice if they made a skinnier version. for me - i thik stanton headshells are the most good looking, but the original black tech with m44-7 (almost if they were made for each other) can not be topped. period.

They look mad ugly to me. But it doesn't matter how they look like, because I stick with those headshells, which get supplied along with the turntables I buy. Hence all I use is Technics or Vestax.

unpleasant execution of a nice idea, they don't even match their own cartridge nevermind the tonearm. it looks like it was inspired by a n64 controller or something. whatever happened to design guided by balance and proportion?

God awfully ugly. :puke: Plus no way to angle cartridge for us S-shaped tone-arm users. :@

correct me if I'm wrong but it looks like that colored thing in the center is used to center the cartridge. I know every time I try to tighten the screws on a cartridge it will twist on me me. this looks like it would make it easier to have your cardridge properly aligned AND at the length you wan't.

Normal headshells look better to me as well

What Ortofon should've done was to make a headshell taking the guesswork out of emulating the straight-arm angle. Would be cool if you could "pop" the cartridge into just the right angle, and then pivot it back in case you're putting it on an actual straight tonearm.

:hmm: Hmmmm......I think I'll stick to my tired and true
M44-7's. As far as tracking is concerned, I never have to angle my carts on my Tech 12's, and put a lot of scratch stress on em too and they don't skip. I have found that a lot of tracking problems are a result of improper set up and a bad choice of needles. Just my 2 pennies worth 8)

hi guys, just bought a pair of these for 40 quid from chemical records, i think they look quite sexy and a bit star trekkie? (it seems as tho they're like marmite - love em or hate em) i bought them coz its something a bit more personal and they look different, they weigh slighty more than tech heads at 9.2 grams when the techs weigh 7.4 i think, wana try and get some shure m447's for them, does any one know if they will fit ok and will i need to add the weights to them?also how do i use they alligning tool and does anybody know where there are any tutorial vids for set up etc? if anyone has any answers please email me @ schoolboyerrordnb@yahoo.co.uk, thanks guys and any help would be appreciated, peece, sbe
