Nike Serato SSL Air Force One AF1

Serato and Nike aren't brands that you might find in the same sentence too often, but the two giants of their respective fields have jumped into bed together and given birth to a limited edition range of white goods. No, not fridges but a sparkly white SSL box, white Airforce Ones complete with SSL logo and a special white bag. When I say limited, I mean you can't buy it ever. Ummmm....

Here's some words:
Nike, Rane and Serato team up to create the Air Force 1 and Scratch LIVE Package to celebrate the AF1’s 25th anniversary

As part of the Air Force 1’s silver anniversary, Nike has collaborated with cutting-edge partners Rane and Serato to create a special edition AF1 and White Scratch LIVE package. The collaboration recognizes the intersection of sports, music and innovation within hip-hop culture.

For the past 25 years the Air Force 1 has made a journey from an innovative performance product to a hip-hop icon. In recognition of this, Rane and Serato have worked with Nike to produce the truly innovative Scratch LIVE package for the digital-age hip-hop DJ.

The Serato Scratch
Central to hip-hop culture is the DJ, whose developed and perfected skills now benefit from the latest technology with Rane’s Serato Scratch LIVE – a revolutionary product that enables DJs to control digital audio files on their laptop with vinyl control records on their turntables.

Air Force 1 and Scratch LIVE Package
Popular Japanese company Head-Porter was approached to create a custom-made bag for transporting a laptop, the Scratch LIVE units and accessories. Constructed from white ballistic nylon, the bag features the Nike pivot logo which references the iconic sole detail of the AF1. To complete the pack, the commemorative White/White AF1 shoe sports the Scratch LIVE logo and incorporates the same white ballistic nylon used for the bag.

A limited number of Air Force 1 and Scratch LIVE packages were created for leading DJs around the globe. Unfortunately, none of these packages are available for purchase.

A photo of the package is available at: www.rane.com

Now it looks veeery nice but would you really take an ultra limited edition white bag into your average sticky floored discotheque? Methinks this is one for the glass showcase. And how many of you are breaking out the car paint this weekend to make your own special SL1 box? And how long before one of these kits appears on eBay to be snapped up by a crazed fanboy collector for really stupid volumes of cash.

I have no idea why I'm posting this story because being mere mortals, you're not likely to see this gear ever but I really like the picture so what the hell.

Sam/Steve/Dean - I'm a UK size 8.

Doesn't it shock and appall to see a pair of shoes on top of a record like that?

I dig the white SSL shit, but I'll happily pass on the rest - white shit gets dirty way too easily.

I don't give a s**t about the SSL package or bag but I would (almost) kill for the AF1's...damn, those would go nice in my AF1 closet...hehe

Oh Brilliant, some uber expensive thing that no one can get. I hate those shoes on top of the vinyl, I feel that it is not respecting DJ's and DJing. I also fail to see the point of making this crap (yes, I do think that these items are a waste).

Sure it looks nice but really, would a DJ REALLY want to buy this? What many DJ's have, from my view, already work very well for them.

anyone who wanted to argue with me that Serato has and will forever be geared towards hip hop can cram it, this is proof.

That is so narrow minded. But I expect nothing less!

at the risk of sounding like someone in their mid-to-late thirties - this is pretty much the opposite of what i always thought hip hop 'stood for'.

and at the risk of sounding like a total hypocrite (AGAIN) maybe ricci was right, and serato was the final nail in the coffin, sidelining those who had practised their craft and were forced to be creative within fixed boundaries

it's not serato's fault, and i'm sure all the nike execs can justify this 'celebration of hip hop culture' etc with carefully conceived speeches, but really it's utter bollocks isn't it? it had to be white of course, it's a sign that someone has too much money and lose all sense of reality - see q's white outfits, diddys waistcoats, r kellys fur and of course all those soulless whitewashed rented LA mtv cribs where the hapless 'host' can't even find their own kitchen

its amazing to read first hand the retardation of this message board. "Serato is the nail in the coffin, forced to be creative within fixed boundaries" what kind of crap is that. First off, no one uses serato for battles or routines. DVS is almost solely used for clubs. i have never seen, other than promo videos people use a dvs for anything other than playing out at a club or bar so the turtableist are still not affected at all by digital. Serato does not make you a better dj by any means, the same muscle memory and technique used with vinyl is needed for serato. This package is freaking hot, I dont know what you purist guys are talking about. This set is no more wack than people who buy limited edition sneakers,or one of art prints or anything else that is limited edition. "This is not what hip hop is about" This is exactly what hip hop is about. Since the beginning, a large element of hip hop was being FLY, unique in fashion and style, standing out. This package is all of that, its looks ill as hell. I guarantee if i gave everyone on this baord this package, every one of you would rock it hard core.

Rogan - most of the top battle sets at DMC were made in DVS systems and cut to custom wax. A growing number of scratch DJs are using DVS systems including Serato for playing out. To say that turntablists are not effected by digital is not at all correct - most that I know have one form or other of DVS.

Well that was an easy one for the designers....

Wonder how much they were paid for painting it all white...

Do you think they considered magnolia?

way to miss pretty much the whole point. muscle memory, turntablists? eh? the point is the ease of availability of huge amounts of music, the ease of setup of powerful systems, but the lack of awareness that it takes so much more than this to become adept enough to play something people truly want to hear. i think you haven't been following much of this discussion that has been unfolding for a long time, and aren't aware of why dj's like premier have objections to 'serato culture'. do i have to link to the 45 king mini turntable routine?

as for this package - hip hop to me was making something out of nothing, doing the unexpected and never resting on your laurels. nike found themselves suddenly able to cash in on the free af1 marketing and are attempting to rewrite history. cant blame serato for wanting to jump in, but its all so cheesy. af1s aren't 'old school' but really if you care about such shit you are insane - it's all being repackaged and resold to you as stuff you must have, must collect, must preserve. the 'limited edition sneakers' you mention are precisely what i mean - disgusting. i see these little run-dmc vinyl toys, it's horrible - just echoes of what was once amazingly powerful, unpredictable movement now reduced to xmas gifts in an Argos catalogue.

i blame james lavelle for all of this. as soon as he bought his way into hip hop culture (a la malcolm mclaren) he brought that wanky euro-trainspotter style to the forefront of the media and diluted the essence. the following generation was lost from the start, thinking that stashing 'limited' beastie boys 7"s was a meaningful pursuit

Typical haters, getting hung up on the equipment and "accouterment" (That's French like MC Solar for you) rather than the music itself. You probably hated that picture of Grandmaster Flash with the LV record crate. You grumps need to get up off the wall and make your way to the dancefloor.

This is a quality package - AF1s are the hands-down people's choice (I prefer shelltoes or the AirMax 95 myself, but...), Serato is a straightforward software/hardware package that is a complement to hip-hop, not a death knell, and the Japanese Head Porter company makes incredible bags. This is a well put-together pack and you sound threatened by it because you don't know about the connections here. The 1200 was new at one point as well, hot kicks have been around longer than you, and this is the way it is. If you're so mad, go listen to some old sway and tech, 99-tech9 stretch and bobbito tapes, and ignore that we live in 2007. So relax and roll with it, "hip-hop to me" followed by a bunch of arrogant "the way it used to be" is the grumpiest attitude you can have. You were a new jack too at one point, and you sound like a whiney girl to me. This coming from a dude who's record collection would KILL yours and I know it, having been djing and producing beats every year since 86. And you know what? Serato is an excellent way to bring a lot of great knowledge and diverse music sets into clubs to the people without having to lug heavy boxes of records around. It's really about what you PLAY, not how you play it, unless you're more worried about some other DJ in the club noticing you're playing off of Serato instead of working your musical selection to get music fans having a good time, which is what "hip-hop is to me."
