Something for the weekend sir?
As I sometimes brag, I get sent stuff in the post. More often that I like bills, but sometimes it's vinyl or CDs. Almost all of it I know is coming but when this package arrived from Canada, I was perplexed to say the least. But I'm mighty glad that
Skratch Bastid did take the time out to send me his latest mixtape - Get Up - for it is a cracker indeed.
For me, a good mixtape pulls from many genres of music across a broad spectrum of time and "Get Up" certainly does that. You know from the start that Skratch Bastid certainly has deck skills, but further listening shows that he also has an ear for good head nodding music. Fusing classic Old School Hip Hop (Blue Cheese by The UMCs) with quality 80's funk (D-Train's "You're The One For Me) and even a P Funk/Pink Floyd mashup thrown in for good measure - it's as if Skratch Bastid has an intimate knowledge of my record collection and personal tastes. The range is wide but that just makes "Get Up" that much better and a stand out from the ridiculously full mixtape market.
This is the best mixtape I've heard in a very long time and well worthy of pumping out of your jeep (or iPod on the hot and sticky London underground) during the forthcoming hot summer days.
I don't give music ratings but know if I like it if it makes it to my iPod and especially into my car - and "Get Up" is doing both. Skratch Bastid - I thank you for sending this to me. Certainly makes writing gear reviews a lot easier.

Mixtapes were free? They didnt become "free" until the internet made it possible to download shit from each other.
Mixtapes in 1988 were selling for $20 on cassette format.
Nowadays, the whole term *mixtape* only applies to about 1% of the stuff brought out to the public. The others are nothing but music that artist themselves put out to promote upcoming albums or really bad copy|paste digital djs that cant mix.
The old saying still stands today: "You get what you pay for...."
And this is worth paying for.

i hope skratch bastid has retired from battling... his sets were embarrasing, except the imperial march thing.
i remember when the P was still free...
i think he means mix CDs...or "Demo" CDs. once CDRs got cheap enough a lot of DJs started handing them out to promote themselves (me included).
That and tapes.. I just remember Dj's giving away mix tapes to promote themselves, but yes way more after CD-R dropped in price.
