All the DVS systems are written for the established standards - various flavours of Windows, an increasing number for OS X but what about the constantly growing Linux community? If Linux is good enough for Dell to install as standard, then it's certainly going places at last. So if you're up for some free scratching, check out
Xwax - open source vinyl emulation.
Just add an interface, Open Sound System drivers, a couple of SSL vinyls and you're off. As with anything Linux, you'll need a degree of OS knowledge to get things going. But I know a few of you will relish this kind of hacking rather than the plug n play approach.
So is this the shape of the scene to come? Will DJing become a kind of homebrew or even open source scene with applications popping up out of nowhere? Seems the trend is write software that uses existing soundcards and established timecode vinyls.
This is just the first version, but man the makers of this software really need to get down with some better skinning. The interface looks like pooooo.

The most fun feature in all these packages is the native wiimote support of deckadance (now all that tiesto waving your arms around actually has some use)

Actually you never know, it might be possible. Call me crazy, but I really thought that having a dedicated OS, like in FS 1.0, was a stellar idea, because that way you fight a lot of the bloat that you get with Windows, and you'll never have a shortage of resources.
made me laugh the stupid arguments I had with stanton who wouldnt 'trust' XP to be able to run a dvs with stability and instead came up with that ridiculous linux install nonsense and hey IT STILL CRASHED ALL THE TIME

It's how well you code and test, not what platform.
It indeed depends on how well you code. But just imagine that you have access to all the really low level code and can optimize that for your app. So you don't have to depend on somebody else's crap untested code.
That's the advantage of linux. Total control.
(If MS decides another security update is needed and they use their standard release strategy (release now, fix later), your app might totally break, and you can't do anything about it)
well it's nice to know that now some people have the opportunity to help develop better code instead of just hoping the company will come out with an update...maybe together they can make something great.

20Kb download?!? Christ on a stick, I've heard of small-footprint apps but that's STR9 ricockulous. Wouldn't mind giving this a spin, being the open-source humping scumbag that I am... only have FS vinyl at present, though
i wonder why you dont see anyone doing more open source shit for final scratch open. they announced FS open 4 months now. How long do you guys think it takes to code and skin a DVS system ? Oh and i just bought traktor scrath, full review comming next week. YAY ME =)
How hot would it be if they made a FREE totally open source DVS SYSTEM that had features and a GUI that could rival serato and other systems, Im talking to the quality that apps like THE GIMP has become compared to photoshop. that would be interesting.
hey it supposedly works very well with the original scratchamp...finally it may have better use than as a paperweight!
I am about 95% certain the FS1 was a windows application that was ported to linux by using WINE, it wasn't a native linux application. That probably had some things to do with the stability.
finalscratch wasn't available on windows until v1.5
FS 1.0 was a BeOS application that was then ported to Linux with version 1.0, and then V 1.1 added Mac OS support. 1.5 was the first version to be for windows.

If this software is only 20kb, I should really consider finding a way to get it running on a spare machine. In fact, now I'm considering making a Linux partition on this lappy and hacking around with it.
It's been so damn long since I've hacked around with Linux though, probably about 13 years!
The lure of Linux is strong. Just over a year ago, while I still had a job in Mac support, I'd have leapt at downloading Linux, installing it on a spare drive and getting to grips with it again. Now, 12 months on, I feel like a Technophobe, fearing what it might do to my smooth running G4.
I guess that when your mortgage depends on the error free running of your own (rather than your employers) computer, hacking around doesn't have the same appeal.
It's amazing how quick you forget stuff. By the time I have a spare moment to try it out, it'll be the standard OS running across all platforms.

If you're looking for a polished and supported product, or one which runs on Windows or Mac, then Serato Scratch Live has a superb reputation and excellent support via the forums.
The reason there aren't more "free" vinyl control apps out there that support Final Scratch is because Stanton's policy makes it impossible to do.

I am using ubuntu linux, and I couldn't get xwax to work on my computer. It doesn't start.
Well I hope that someone will make a build for ubuntu and I ould be able to simply install it via ubuntu repo's. It would be cool if someone would add it into ubuntustudio package

Have been looking for such a thing for a while
and feel happy that i won't have to get windows
to play some nice tunes.
And if the code will be free sooner or later
it maybe brings me back to programming.
worked like a charm for my ubuntu installation. i must say mixxx with it`s weak feature-set is bloated and just hangs my computer not to mention i cannot configure it to run with my audio8. xwax does run and it's hella fast. i`d love to see some effects/loops and shortcuts implemented. Thanks a lot!
Jancis: Keep an eye out for Mixxx 1.7.1...we've increased its stability in many ways and have increased its feature set. We are always interested in hearing suggestions though, so please send a message to the developer mailing list or post a Wishlist item in out bug tracker.
