VCI 4 UK OK!
Posted by Gizmo on April 11, 2007

We've teased it, previewed it and generally rubbed your nose in possibly the coolest controller out there - and now you can buy it. That is, if you live in the UK anyway.

A few words from Leisuretec, Vestax's UK distributor:

The first shipment of the much hyped Vestax VCI-100 DJ Midi Controller has landed in the UK!

With 100% take up from the UK Vestax dealer network, the units will be available from Saturday 14th April.

The VCI-100 is Vestax’s first foray into the world of digital DJ’ing, and has received critical acclaim from the DJ Pro’s that have managed to get their hands on pre sale units.

Distributed by Leisuretec Distribution, this is one of many exciting new products from Vestax, including the PMC-280 mixer, due to arrive in the UK at the start of May.

Also look out for news on the coming PDX3000 turntables!

Vestax VCI-100: SRP £419 (inc VAT)

Now it's available, one is coming in to the skratchlab for a full review. All I need now is a decent soundcard....

It's the Vestax VCM-100. I have no official info right now, just my own pictures and a rough Japanese translation:

quote:
"It assembles, the USB MIDI controller "VMC-100" for the mixed type PC DJ player, in only 3 seconds, in the dedicated note PC putting stand of possible knockdown type joint possibility. The heat dissipation effect of PC was raised, also operativity improved."

I'm told that it's perhaps aimed more at the VJ market than regular DJs hence the lack of jog wheels.

I'm beginning to think that I should just use simple icons to relay the information enclosed in the news stories as it's obvious that people can't be arsed to read even the shortest of press releases. :hmm:

Corporation - I think it means that all authorised Vestax dealers decided to stock it. While I don't expect scenes like the PS3 queues in the US, I'd expect this first batch to go pretty quickly.

I think it's a little bit expensive to be just a midi-controller.

- and I paid £69 less than the RRP

joy oh joy!

It's arrived. Trying to teach Numark's Virtual Vinyl the MIDI map. Long process...

On April 12, 2007, BattleFunk commented...
that is quite a price on that thing!

even with £70 knocked off, thats a lot of money for a midi controller - the build quality must be very robust for that cost?

it looks good though, eh?

seems funny that its cheaper to buy a QFO

Hopefully when it hits the US, our UK brothers will have found any bugs that comes with a first gen unit.

@Guizmo, thanks for your info on this controller, I guess I will have to forget about it since it will never come out, but if it does I am a buyer for sure!

i'm not sure i would want a vestax soundcard...they aren't known for expertise in that area...look out how long rane have taken with their ASIO release, a sure sign that if you want to do it properly and be able to support your product you had better invest time and money

Werd

The single most important aspect of any sound card is driver stability. A great card can often end up a lame duck either because drivers don't exist for your platform, are poorly supported or just plain flakey.

Great cards already exist for pocket-money prices. I'm a 5th year student and I can still afford one!

can some1 pls confirm VISTA 32 bit compatibility?

Thank you...

On April 13, 2007, k commented...
in that case why dont vestax just buy one in and graft it into the system, dont get me wrong i own a focusrite saffire fw soundcard, but for a simple dj rig its overkill, and i like an all in one solution where possible

On April 13, 2007, Gizmo commented...
I understand not putting one in. Sound cards are independent to the controller which after all just does as it's programmed to do. You can use the VCI for ever and only have to upgrade the sound card as you need to, rather than the whole unit. If Vestax had put a sound card in, people would only moan that they already had one and Vestax are crap at sound cards etc etc.

Price I negotiated is 429€ what is 292,48 British Pounds.

btw: I'm from Germany so it has also landed in Germany and is ready to be delivered ^_^

429 is awesome given that only a few dealers have the unit in Germany yet. Where did you get it from?

On April 14, 2007, vci-100 4 ever commented...
From http://www.musik-service.de

They sell it for 449€. That's the price all other dealers have, too. But in some cases you can also propose a price you wish to buy it for.
For example there are other dealers like

djservice.com | musik-schmidt.de | deejayladen.com | dj-palace.eu

I found musik-service.de was the most serious dealer (reading about experiences from other users) and they have good support with a big community (http://www.musiker-board.de)

I have one on the way to my house via djdeals.com

i get it some time next week.

i was very surprised they had them in stock.

can't believe it's finally coming!

I'm based in the US btw.

DJ Deals claims to have lots of stuff in stock that wont arrive there for 3-4 weeks... hope it shows up when you think it will

On April 14, 2007, SpAzZ commented...
Been there, done that. DJDeals is an unreliable online dealer. But good luck with ordering from them. Sometimes they come through and most times they don't. Especially with new gear.

On April 14, 2007, SpAzZ commented...
Ok, I just checked the DJDeals forum and the company has stated that they have 75 VCI-100s in stock. This is a U.S. company located in Vermont. Their price is $499.00.

OMFG!

So, mine arrived at 11am yesterday. Its 24 hours later and I'm just going to bed. Its that good. Hats off to Vestax. This is such a well made unit. Miuzi weighs a ton, but this is heavier! The platters are solid and the faders excellent. Anyway, its Gizmo's role to do the reviews, so I'll kill it here!

To all the haters bitching about the moolah:

a) get a life
b) get a paper round or work a bit harder. This is well worth the duckets.

i got mine!

it's a wonderful unit - so much better than my dm2/mixer combo.

the wheels are great - absolute no track slippage in traktor (unlike my dm2).

the faders rock and the buttons have a satisfying click.

over all i give it a 9.5 out of 10 (.5 off because it's so expensive - but worth it)

On April 22, 2007, LNE commented...
Mixing is really great. Love the layout and logic of the buttons. Love thefact, that the lights onthe unit react on what you to withing the software by mouse.

However, Scratching is not so easy (Gizmo, big ups for your skillz shown on the video) - am not a big scratcher but I have some problems to adapt ot the wheels.

one question to yall: do both wheels of your unit "feel" the same. My left wheel is much stiffer than the right one. makes it really difficult to adapt. the stiffer deck has less of the start up effect, Gizmo descibes in his small test...

I unscrewed the platters and changed the wheels - didnt change anything, so its not a problem of the platter and the acryl piece, but must be something inside the unit. Read in the traktor forums, that some other guys have thus issue too. Maybe, one can adjust the stiffness? (changing the sensivity in the back of the unit, doesnt change)

Maybe some1 got a hint on how to solve this?

Thanks in advance

Giz, or anybody out there, I'm getting mine thurs, if not tom. Anyway, I've used Traktor with a friends x-session and my macbook pro and found out that I will e needing an external audio interface to have both master as well as cueing (without having to toggle the on-screen switch), perhaps the built-in audio for monitor and external for master out. would the Edirol UA-1EX suffice for this? I used to be a midi-snob-slash-serato-loyalist but vestax did a great job luring me with their VCI-100. I'd still use SL for gigs though.

Also, would attaching a turntable to an external (ASIO/CoreAudio) sound card input act in place of NI's audio Audio 8 or is it hardware-locked like torq-connective and ssl-sl1and57sl? If so, would the time-coded NI vinyl and/or FS vinyl work?

Sorry, too many quesitons but I do hope to get answers. Many after I get answers, the midi-controlled universe will welcome me :P

vestax is sold out?

wow.

i wouldn't have thought it for such a big company.

i'm just glad i was able to snag one before they're gone (along with a monome 40h, also sold out).

i saw that pssl.com had them in stock for about a day - now they say not in stock until June 4th.

I just did a 6 hour company picnic with my unit. the VCI-100 worked flawlessly! everyone was very impressed with the setup and the versatility of the unit. I'm totally sold on the unit. totally worth the $500.

even with the traktor vinyl sounding startup lag, scratch performance is still on point. the jog wheels/x-fader are really great (at least for me - i'm no q-bert).

if you use traktor in any capacity, i would suggest a vci-100 in a heart beat.

On May 4, 2007, Diz One commented...
So how are people finding their VCI-100s? (the lucky ones who have them!;)

My platters seem to be developing a grating sound like the bearings aren't great or something is wearing on some metal. Anybody else noticing this?

You really do have to learn a lot again from what you know, as the platters don't rotate, everything is weird at first but I like the differences now, except for the wuhaaaaaaah release effect which is my only real grumble.

How are people finding soundcards in cutting lag times?

Another interesting thing I never thought of before I bought it, because the "decks" and faders are so closed together you end up cutting in some strange contorted positions after prolongued sessions - can cause cramps!

On May 4, 2007, wreck-one commented...
well, i love mine for what it is. I think I experieced that grating sound you mentioned while playing around with sensitivty control. I finally found the setting that suits me. Well, either that or I actually am starting to adapt to the VCI. Learning curve is easy as far as buttons. Its your typical MIDI controller but I do need a lot of adapting with the lag times. Yes, I also hate the "wuuuhhaaaaa" effect as I can't "push-in" my cue as I do on vinyl.

I don't think I'll be taking this out for gig real soon as I am new to MIDI. Now if only Serato would release its MIDI function so I can find more use for the VCI :-)
