REVIEW: Vestax Faderboard
Posted by Gizmo on January 9, 2007

Sometimes, :x: is soooo on the ball and ahead of the pack, it's embarrassing. This however is equally embarrassing but for the wrong reasons. I commissioned Ceri Grafu to write a Vestax Faderboard review - which he did - but for a whole load of lame brain excuses jolly good reasons, I never published it. Having spotted a few posts on various forums on the scratchernet recently, I figured it was time to dust off this 2 year old review and give the Faderboard the attention it deserved.

The Faderboard is another of those experimental Vestax ideas that never really took off in the wider market place. Probably a massive hit in with the wacky Japanese, but destined to be a bit of a white elephant in the rather more conservative western world. I played with one for a short time and it did pique my interest, and perhaps with Vestax's continuing adventures with MIDI in the shape of the forthcoming VCI-100, perhaps we'll see a resurgence in the Faderboard's fortunes. I'm pretty certain they're discontinued now but they do pop up on ebay from time to time.

Anyway - that's enough procrastinating and making excuses for late reviews - check out Ceri's review.

Was checking the Vestax site this other day and the faderboard is still in there... Sure it's discontinued?

£400 UK Sterling each....basically BNIB.

First Rate has used one on tour for over a year and does do an excellent set using it. Pogo and Bizniss also used them a few times including a demo at PLASA a few years ago which I think Gizmo filmed.

The review is actually very truthful.....it is not a product for everyone, and many many people misunderstood what it was supposed to do....but it does have some unique features and is a good piece of kit.

The faderboard to me is a waste of money ever since midi controllers started to get so cheap.

I "programmed" my own faderboard for $150....

1. buy an Evolution UC-33e (similar layout to a faderboard)
2. get a "postcard-ware" Midi translator.
3. intercept the midi signal of the up-faders and assign them as notes, and the position as velocity / pressure.
4. now your UC-33e acts like a faderboard.
5. send the signals into your favorite sequencing program.

OK...And how much did your software & computer cost...I'm guessing a little more than $150.
