NAMM 2006 - Tascam
Posted by Gizmo on January 21, 2006

Much like my surprise when turntablist crew Noisy Stylus brought out luggage, now cool clothing company Mixwell are bringing out a CD deck, albeit with the help of Tascam. The CD-DJ1 is a dinky piece of scratchy goodness when used with the TTM1 but equally well equipped for all sorts of other DJs as well.

When you see it on the flesh, you're drawn to it and just feel the urge to pick it up. Only a tad wider than a CD, this little deck packs in quite a lot of features:

• MP3 support with full tags
• Seamless loop
• 2 hot starts
• Pitch and master tempo

You can of course use it on it's own as a small CD deck but it's real power for us scratch heads is the hookup to Tascam's rather lovely TTM1. Like the Vestax CDX-05, plug in the TTM1, plonk it on your turntable and suddenly you're scratching with the CD. But what I really like about this is that unlike the Vestax deck, the sound quality is maintained at slower speeds - so no more digital nastiness when doing drags.

Yes - I want one. Yes - I was tempted to liberate one from the stand. And yes - I think you'll all want one. Or two. Looks like March time to be at the dealers but final pricing to be advised.

First post!!
hahahahaha.

On January 21, 2006, Gizmo commented...
While this whole first post thing is quite annoying, I think that I should turn this around and along with the skratchlounge "ironing board" designs, I think a skratchworx "first post" t-shirt might be in order.

Anyway - enough thread hijacking. About the CD-DJ1...

Death to pitch resolution. ^_^

Sure Giz,
I announced this 2 days ago, and everyone said whoopdy doo, but you say something, and NOW people are taking notice. :)

Giz - Is there a vid out there on the TTM1? I've heard a lot about it, but don't know how it works.

On January 21, 2006, rithie commented...
Do u think that would fit in ... a portable drum ? :weirdo:

this can be my first cd-deck! i hope its not over-priced like the pioneer series.

Giz, it's a bit of the subject but you mentioned those Noisy Stylus scratch mixer/record bags... do you know where I can get one from in this country? Are you going to stock them in the Skratch shop? Back to the program - the CD deck looks great providing it ain't too costly... recently I've been playing with my mate's cheap Numark CD deck - even without any kind of scratch function the looping and hot cues are priceless - in terms of both creativity and fun!

<offtopic>I have some bags coming in. I'll let you know.</offtopic>

On January 22, 2006, DJ ROCKWELL commented...
Many thanks my friend. And on another off-topic subject I would like to personally thank you for all the hard work you - without all your efforts us skratch-heads would have nowhere to go! You get to all the shows, write the only relevant reviews, and now you even voice our opinions to the manufacturers... and they actually listen!!!!!!

i'm really curious howmuch its gonna cost!

On January 24, 2006, 2tall commented...
mixwell won't fuck around, this should be worth looking at, but if you want to cut, just use a record!

On January 24, 2006, JB@Tascam commented...
It is going to be UNDER text :weirdo: , and will be out in early April. Also you don,t NEED to use vinyl with it, a lot of peeps just use a slip matt.

Hey JB, my friend, how are you, and welcome to skratchworx

On January 25, 2006, Junk One "The Mixwell Kid" commented...
Peace folks...

The player will be near $400 as JB said. And take it from Gizmo, this is a definite must buy. And yeah you should consider 2 of them! We took our time with the team at Tascam to assure that all the dj needs are met and surpassed. You cats are gonna trip that it is so small and does all the things that it does! Unfortunately for some cd players, for the cost of theirs, you can buy two of ours with the same if not better quality sound and features. Just make sure your Pro Audio store has this ish in stock!!!

why is tascam cd-dj better than a vestax cdx-05 ?
pricewise its almost the same and sizewise its only a little smaller...
less features than the cdx-05 but maybe better sound quality when scratching. What else?

On January 25, 2006, Junk One "The Mixwell Kid" commented...
The rest is up to you srak, get one in front of you and let it do its own talking.
Peace

Thanks Junk One,
Guys, it is like I always say "YOU are the only one that can determine what is best for YOU", after all it is YOUR money you are spending. I truly believe if you pick this up and play with it you will fall in "DIGITAL LOVE" with it. Hey I like that "DIGITAL LOVE". I heard someone at NAMM call the TT-M1 the Digital Tone Arm of the CD-DJ1.........I like that toooooo.
DJStevieRay good speaking to you the other day, you are a class act.
Peace

As much as I don't like CD tables, this looks cool. So cheap, wouldnt mind copping one of these and the TTM1 for a bit of fun.

On February 2, 2006, KJ Butta commented...
The dope thing about this CD Turntable is that it's smaller than a line sheet of paper and it weighs approximately 2 lbs. So it's really portable. Just throw it in your DJ Bag. So if you have an hour guest, and you want to play exclusives, just plug into the line, plug the AC, mount the TTM-1 and you're ready to go. No need for a computer or unpluggin' the turntables. Plus most MP3 CD's holds about 200 songs. A very innovative device!!

On February 8, 2006, Liston commented...
This thing is the same price as the Vestax CDX 05, it better sound fantastic to compete.

On February 8, 2006, Len commented...
Hm i do not find that so cheap, if its gonna cost approx 400 dollar, it will be like 350/400 euros in my country, i'd rather spend 200 euros more on a pioneer cdj800. Only thing thats got me doubting is the ttm1 connection.

Can you scratch with the little jogwheel on the tascam?

On February 10, 2006, Busta DJ commented...
I have it from a real good source it is actually going to be more like $299.00 US. At that you can pick up a pair for slightly more than one 05.
I know that I am going to grab a couple when they are released.

Len,
The little jog wheel is for pitch bend and scrolling through the menue functions. DJ Skilz ran through it all for me at NAMM and I am sold. Cool looking new piece for your kit.
Peace

On February 10, 2006, Liston commented...
One 05 is just 400 now, but 299 does sound a bit more reasonable. Busta, what's so good about this cd player?

On February 13, 2006, Busta DJ commented...
The thing I really liked was the size, and features(in conjuction with the TT-M1 I have to add). I am pretty much a vinyl guy(with an open mind...lol). For me to be able to burn my vinyl on to a mp3 cd and take a few of those with some NEW vinyl goodies AND the CD-DJ1 in ONE bag gets me excited. I dont like things that are tooooo complicated and this wasn't at all. Watching Skilz do his thing with such presicion was way to Kewl and I think I can get real comfortable with this. Check it out when they start shipping, I am going to get one to start with and maybe 2.

279 euros in Germany (05 is 400€). WHOA!

On April 15, 2006, KJ Butta commented...
Don't forget the portablity. Less than 2lbs. Show up to a gig, with records, CD-DJ1, TTM, and easy setup, and play and scratch digital audio. But the value is great as well!!

On May 3, 2006, Boogs commented...
where and when is it available?

On May 3, 2006, Boogs commented...
For me this is a must have in combination with the TT-M1, because I don't like to bring a fragiel notebook to a party... Finally a good alternative for Final Scratch and Serato for a good price!
