DJ Tech VTT-101: Pocket platter scratcher

DJ Tech VTT-101 midi controller

Technology brings me one step close to my dream - a palm sized deck with built in scratch fader. I don't expect this unit to offer QFO performance, but good enough to enable flare-friendly fun on the sofa, on the train - anywhere in fact, so that the phrase "I'm just off to the toilet to crack one off" will mean something entirely new. Rasteri's strictly prototype unit is what I'm talking about, but while I wait for that to become a reality, the DJ Tech VTT-101 is certainly a step on the right direction.

DJ Tech VTT-101 midi controller

Clearly, this is perhaps the simplest MIDI controller (is it OK to refer to them as midicons from now on?) known to man, offering a touch sensitive platter, play and cue buttons and a crossfader. I'm guessing (in the absence of info from DJ Tech) that this is entirely configurable to that the crossfader could be a pitch control or maybe work with your software of choice's crossfader curve control to make this into a semi-decent scratch deck.

I simply see it as a hopefully cheap way to get the 3rd and 4th deck functionality in software like Traktor without needing full decks. If you're lucky enough to make it to NAMM I expect you'll be able to see this and more on stand 7023. In the meantime, check out this short video that probably doesn't do the unit justice:

ya can't just let go like that on something that isn't spinning. it needs a little forward push.

Why does this company always have the least competent people demo their products on YouTube?

I am biased about DJ-Tech. Sometimes they come up with plain weird stuff such as the "DJ Mouse" (OMG :push: ), sometimes they have more innovations in store than some of the more popular manufacturers (see Kontrol One or this unit for instance).

Personally, I like the idea of having a very basic MIDI-controller with a jogwheel, two buttons and a fader. It could be a useful addition to an existing live-performance setup (for e.g. to add a bit of scratch-action) or like Gizmo wrote, as a cheap way to add a third deck to be controlled through DJ-software. The only thing I miss is a seperate pitch-fader added. Or how about a MIDI-controller with a platter that actually spins? I have not seen anything like this yet.

At times, the most simple concepts can be the best ones, so thumbs up for DJ-Tech for this idea!

And thumbs down for the indeed truly horrible demo video representing the product...

Not bad idea!I have I-mix reload. This video is terrible! :s
There are many video of DjTech on web but some very good and some very BAD like this!!!

On January 4, 2010, Wozza commented...
That video is a shame as I feel it could do more damage then good. The platter design is fine, tried and tested on many CD players so no probs there.
Hopefully the fader is OK. Not expecting innofader or even P+G standard but a good Alps fader or equivalent is needed.
Curve if I am right would be done in software and is limited by MIDI but hopefully should work for decent scratches so it is just the quality of the fader.
This should be good, certainly a good idea but limited appeal on the whole DJ scene so I do not expect them to sell a lot.
Travel is limited by being a MIDI controller and having to use a PC. If they could find a way of plugging this into another small unit (prob MP3 player with headphone out but with two channels (Pacemaker idea) and ability to take MIDI signals for control) they you would have a great little personal, portable scratch buddy.
Another option is to include an MP3 (or poss 2) into the unit but that would start to add up going against the idea of a small, cheap scratch unit

Hi guys,

I think DJ-Tech is doing a range of products with really big differences in design and quality. For instance, Kontrol One is, IMO, one of the best MIDI controllers out there. It has been mainly designed by Kontrol DJ in Spain and it is only manufactured by DJ-Tech in China.

Other products, such as Mouse DJ, look like cheap toys... When we buy Pioneer or Vestax, quality and performance is always guaranteed but with DJ-Tech combine really good products with low-cost amateur dj hardware.

On January 5, 2010, HardtraX commented...
@bedouin: Jesus Christ, I never saw a presentation video like this before! :weirdo:

It turns out that DJ-Tech also have another VTT-101 demo online and they call this one the "Performance Video".

Those videos are on the same level as the incredibly disillusioned and awful singers that audition for Pop Idol. I can just picture the big ass retarded grin on this dude's face as he clumsily claws away at that box. How can anyone think this sounds good?

On January 5, 2010, Gizmo commented...
For the love of God - can we focus on the product instead of the presentation?

Is there a market for this? How much would you pay? How would you use it? Would you buy 1 or 2?

On January 5, 2010, Zimmer commented...
I think this is a really great product, perfect to go with a Traktor Kontrol X1 (because the only lacking features are : big cue / play buttons + jogwheel + pitch fader)

You could use these things in a variety of setups (in a house DJ perspective) :

- If you're using traktor scratch with CDJ 1000 in the club, but you don't have them at home, these DJ Tech units will perfectly replace them (because anyways with timecode, the only thing you're doing on a CDJ is using the jog, play, cue and pitch)
So at home you would have : 2 of these units + mixer + traktor kontrol X1 for looping & effects. That way you use the same setup at home and in the clubs

- You can also use it to have a jogwheel for deck C in traktor if you already have a VCI-100 for decks A & B

If this is priced correctly (between 50 and 80 €), I would definitely buy a pair to go with the traktor kontrol X1.

Last point : I really like DJ Tech's idea of having SINGLE deck units (like the kontrol 1), because I'm used to the CD layout, and I like to mix with a real mixer, and having one deck on each side (something you can't do with a controller like the VCI)

By the way, I really hope vestax realeases a single deck VCI

On January 5, 2010, imfromthafutur commented...
@ Wozza,
DJtech already has a two deck MP3 unit.
Let's see that thing in action.

Gizmo,
i think this is an ALMOST for markettable.
IT absolutely need 2 faders. For a couple of reasons, get the CF to the side of the deck like we're accustomed to; Pitch is a simple and effective to way to spice up scratching; and for REAL right or left use.
Fader on each side in the corners, and they got something.

I'm still waiting for a product like this that doesn't need to be connected to computer to work properly.

What's the point of having this unit at home? We can use turntables and a mixer for the same purpose that work far better...

What's the point of having this unit if we have to bring our laptop to work with it? I guess if someone purchased this to practice outside home they would give up bringing it out of home by the third or fourth time... People are lazy! We don't want to carry too much equipment, specially just for practicing. Eventually it would be just a toy getting dust in a shell...

I'm still waiting for an unit like this but working standalone. Where we just needed to upload some audio files to the unit and start practicing outdoors.
This way we could put on our backpack without too much trouble and just practice in the Bus or whatever...

Of course i'm a scratch guy... so i think there should be a motor on the platter and good crossfader. And i guess the smaller the better.

On January 5, 2010, DJ fab69 commented...
I think this is a great thing as additional controller

and how about turning it 90 degrees, you have Cue / Play on the left and a pitchfader on the right ...

-> Crossfader is still on the mixer

With all likelyhood, I'll buy at least one. I've had my eye on the kontrol 1 that DJTech sells for quite a while, but it's just a bit more than I really need. At that kind of price, I'd go ahead and pony up the bucks and get something like the VCI100 or even more bucks for an NS7.

To me, this looks like more of a utility controller. Add it in with an SCS3.d or maybe my MPD24 and I'd have a very serviceable rig to control traktor with when playing out. Also, it would be really neat for scratch practice while traveling. I'm already gonna have a laptop with me, so it's not much more to lug around. Sure beats my other ideas for such purposes: a qfo or a scratchophone... MUCH lighter and smaller.

I am somewhat disappointed that there are only two buttons and one fader on this device, though. It would be nice to have the chassis widened by about 3/4" and have a pitch fader go the entire length of the chassis on one side and maybe a bank of six assignable buttons between the play and cue buttons up top. Nice that the XF area is clean and clear, though.

I guess the big sticking point that it will all come down to is price. If they can get this unit, as it is pictured here, to the US market for $50 - $80, I'll probably buy two of them. One may be given to somebody else, but for sure I'll pick up two when they're available. If the price is from $80 - $120, I'll buy one to try it out. Anything above that and I won't buy one until I see a review stating that it's the second coming of skratch wheel goodness. My Ion Discover DJ is currently the crowned champion of cheap jogwheel awesomeness, so DJTech has quite an uphill battle ahead of them with this unit.

Overall, I'm very interested. I would like to see more DJTech products carried by US companies, though. I've been looking for some of their controllers for a friend and can't seem to locate one anywhere except in their own web store.

Hilarious.

So what you're saying is that DJing is just for people with deep pockets and that I should only cover gear that pros will use to the exclusion of MIDI controllers? I started on belt drives and a mixer with no cross fader. No scrub that - I started on a dual tape deck. People have to start somewhere, and for some this is an ideal addition to their laptop only setup. Not their only means of DJing of course, but this definitely has uses. Skratchworx would be a very quiet place if I only gave news and reviews on non-MIDI stuff.

Many pro DJs are using 50 quid controllers - James Zabiela even has a £99 Korg effects unit on his setup. So let's not be under the illusion that it has to be big money to be useful. And let's not also fall into the trap of assuming that large amounts of high end gear makes you a pro DJ. Give this unit to a good DJ along with a laptop and tell them that that's all they have to rock a crowd and they will. It's about your own personal skills.

I've often been accused of pandering exclusively to the high end, and in many respects this is true. So I'm actively broadening the scope of skratchworx to be inclusive of everyone, regardless of styles or budget. When I say try, I recently had one budget manufacturer who sent me a review unit, but didn't like the small amount of criticism that I wrote - nothing to heavy, just pointers really. I actually gave it a good review, but they've since decided that they couldn't handle constructive criticism, and preferred a review that sounded like PR - not my style. So not everyone will be covered on skratchworx, but I'm not actively excluding anyone either.

So Mr Me Again Fuck That - if you don't like what you see, feel free to go find a site that caters exclusively to your own tastes. Or don't bother negotiating the security code at all, because unless you missed the memo, the scene is all about controllers and MIDI these days. And perhaps you missed all the other stories this year about high end gear such as the exclusives on the new Pioneer CDJs - about as pro and expensive as you can get really. Next week will also feature some very expensive gear being shown at NAMM too.

Get me blud?

@DENON Denon DNHS5500 Denon how bout you make something usefull that doesnt cost 1100$ eh?

@MeAgainFuckThat, I'll try and not take anything you say serious, as I cant tell if you're being sarcastic or being real. Regardless your comments are useless and a waste of time to read, this product isnt pushing a scene into the toilet you tool, something this simple can have huge benefits to a mobile dj. I personally want one just for quick cueing of tracks in traktor, and I dont wanna spend 800$ on a VCI.

@Gizmo Why waste your time with that tard, some people have the infatuation with expensive toys, and anything less then 500$ isnt worth there time. Some people look at a piece of equipment and only contemplate buying it if its expensive and looks nice, rather then focusing on its abilititties. Sometimes I just need to remind myself that some people are not as smart as others.
