Here's hoping Quixpin isn't quixotic...
Posted by Gizmo on August 17, 2009

You know when I keep saying that squeezing the DJ experience into an iPhone probably wouldn't happen any time soon? Weeelll... I may have to eat a hat or something as Quixonic appear to shoehorned a highly credible DJ experience right into Apple's industry redefining pocket wonder. Enter Quixpin.

Reminding me of the old Numark Blue Dog mixer, Quixpin works on 3 screens - one for each deck and one for the mixer in the middle. The sound theory is that that because you're only doing basic mixing, you don't need to be messing with both decks at once. And once you have your tracks cued up, your attention moves to the mixer anyway. Good work.

Using music isn't as straightforward as simply picking from your iTunes list. In fact, you have to set your phone up as an FTP server to exchange music between your iPhone and computer. Sounds rough in theory, but in practice I'm sure it's fine.

There are 2 caveats:

1. You have to convert your music to mono MP2 format. No - that's not a typo, but is a way round Apple's highly restrictive audio app rules.
2. If you want to have headphone cue and master output, you'll need to buy a Y splitter and a pair of mono mini jacks.

Anyway, here's if you're happy enough with the FTP thing, file conversion and a few extra bits of cabling, this is possibly as near to a Pacemaker as you'll get for now. If you want to know more, go to the Quixonic site for more details.

The graphical user interface looks a bit cack but it seems to work pretty well. Maybe someone could bring out a 32pin connector / jack plug thing so you can mix and cue in stereo (once apple calm down about music formats that is)

I commend the makers of Quixpin. We were waiting for competition to our Hot Wax DJ Player (http://HotWaxPlayer.com)

@SD - I'm guessing, that like our software, you CAN already use the 30-pin Apple Component AV Cable in the dock connector to make connecting your Quixpin-enabled iPhone/iPod touch to your mixer or amp very easy.

The tracks are not synced very well...

The pitch slider is inverted. It should go faster as you pull it down.

BTW anybody know of anything like Kueit on iPhone? Or any other sampler application?

pretty neat. can't say i like the idea of touching the waveform for beat correction...plus with the absence of some sort of key-lock it just sounds awful. did you hear those piano notes? made my skin crawl. still one could get by with quick segues but long term blending is out of the picture unless you can get the pitch spot on.

can we get a quote on the resolution for the pitch buttons? how much pitch shift percentage per tap?

So i've been using it for about a week now, and i have to say that it indeed does get the job done. I was used to using Torq (i use serato now ) and this UI it somewhat similar. There is a slight tracking issue. The wave forms are always in sync and since i dont use headphones with this app ( because you can just look at it ) the wave forms need to be accurate. Other than that , i get i would add a play button to the mixer screen, and make for a stereo mode without the splitting ( since you can just use the wave forms to beatmatch )

the mp2 quality wont let you get away with playing at a club or anything, but for an impromptu party takeover, or the in the car microrave session, this thing is TIGHT!

Yup Yup... This thing is wicked for a quick mixdown in the car or house party or when your DVS crashes on you... torq, serato, traktor etc!

@DJ K MO sorry you left Torq man... Come on back, we don't bite!
