I got an NS7! Pictures and words follow...

Not wishing to blow my own trumpet in an obviously self gratuitous way, but skratchworx has pretty much got the world exclusive on Numark's
NS7. I have a And they want me to share my experiences with you coming up to launch date, via the multiple mediums of words, pictures and video. So in true gear pr0n style, I did a
quick unboxing photoshoot for you to... um enjoy in the privacy of your own bedrooms.
Some first impressions, throwing a few words out there in tag cloud style:
HeavyBe under no illusion - this is no lightweight plastic controller, and is very much full sized decks and mixer compressed into a smaller box. And despite all the nay sayers who seem happy to dismiss Numark gear as plastic toys without having actually ever touched an NS7, this is several notches above Numark's usual feel level. There is
nothing cheap about this at all - the finish is superb and every control without exception feels solid.
Fan?After I'd plugged it in and switched it on, I was greeted with a highly audible fan noise - a first for any DJ gear I've ever used. This clearly is for cooling, as inside the NS7's case are a couple of heavy motors right out of the TTX. Having been troubled by overheating issues when first released as the TTX1, the TTX's motors were fixed and now sit happily inside the NS7. So it is only to be expected that some sort of additional cooling be incorporated inside the case as well as vents in the back and underside. In a club or at an event, you wouldn't notice it. But at home, you may find yourself turning it off when not in use.
And to clarify - this doesn't effect the actual audio quality. It's just the physical hum from the always active fan.
Plug and PlayAfter installing the driver and ITCH and rebooting, using the NS7 and ITCH is ridiculously easy. Clearly the NS7 is designed with ease in mind, and the extensive collaboration between Numark and Serato has seen that being the focus. Well I assume that's the case because as soon as I fired up ITCH, I'd made crates and was scratching and juggling in less than 2 minutes. And the rest of the controls are extremely intuitive and required no manual reading to get into. I will read the manual of course, but being the jumping in at the deep end type of guy, I found the deep end to not be that deep at all, but in a good way.
MIDI is going to be interesting. Firing up various MIDI apps saw all the usual controls being manually mapped via MIDI learn without issue - except for the platters. My guess is that the high speed MIDI used in the NS7 just isn't compatible with other MIDI apps right now. Apparently MixVibes Cross can handle this hi res MIDI so I've updated my beta and will give that a go tomorrow.
That'll do for now. But if you have any questions, be sure to fire them into the comments. I'll try to give you a reasonably immediate answer, and maybe even some Serato or Numark dudes might chip in too.
F'n incredible, Gizmo. You. Are. The. Man.

Having seen it in action at PLASA last year I was very impressed by the performance that this unit facilitates.
Fantastic, been looking forward to this.
I suppose that we all have three BIG questions that need to be answered first:
* Is this really a practical replacement for TTs and a mixer?
* Is scratching on the platters worse than, as good as, or better than scratching on Pioneer CDJs, Denon motorized CDJs, and TTs?
* Besides not having bigger platters and effects built-in, does the NS7 deliver on the best nextlevelness that we were led to believe?
Thanks,
-KLH
Standing by to chup in...
Yepp Giz, 14bit MIDI is still not supported by many programms.
I don't even know about any other controllers than the Vestax VCI-300 and now NS7, who use 14bit Midi.
Pretty cool to know is that Traktor Pro now supports 14bit MIDI and can at least be used with the VCI-300 which is my favorit weapon of choise besides my Turntables.
Mikey, do you mean 24-bit?
Damn Giz, this is the moment where I think you have the best job in the world! I am surprised by the early delivery of the NS7 to your door but somewhat expected if Serato and Numark want any formal review/feedback before March 24. I will be looking for your detailed review of the NS7 and to place an order soon after that.
Cheers, mate!
dVo
@gizmo
You are a freaking god!! Can't wait for the videos.
Could you rough up the box dimensions + shipping weight?
dig the built-in laptop stand...
Giz is chillin! What more can I say?
Well, quite a bit actually

I want to know if you can do all of your scratches? How do the platters feel compared to CDJs, Denon's, CDX etc? How does the Xfader feel? How does working in ITCH compare to working in Scratch Live?
I think people will find that Serato partnering with NUmark was not a bad move. And we can get effects later. Give me a rock solid platform that does the basics well, then we can talk about adding more bells and whistles.
i have a question,
Is it possible to use the rca aux line in(in the front) and the both output as an fx send/return for external fx pod's/samplers/pedals?is it an option to assign that in itch?
Great that its you getting the first review, you'll do it justice...congrats!!!
to Serato and Numark,
Referring to my question /
If it's not possible to do that ,i think you guy's should get on it, specifically the fact that itch doesn't have effects and it wouldn't effect your stability in any way... I'm sure there would be a way to rout the sound card that way.
i could think of a million different reasons why this would be great...
If I don't get to review it I'll... I'll resign in protest!

I reiterate my earlier offer of fellatio in exchange for one of these.
Good work Giz...
I hate to blow our group trumpet, but we've had an NS7 on dem in London for nearly a week now

http://www.westenddj.co.uk/numark_ns7.asp
I could hear and see the excitement just bursting through the review.I even saw you made a little typo error in the review but I can understand.I could imagine how many pounds this thing carries along with high shipping costs.

I just tried to get a quote for shipping... ouch. It's not going to Oz mate!

Scratching is way better than the CDJs, slightly better than the Denon 5500, not as good as the new 3700. What's interesting is that it's sort of fake vinyl like the CDX. It has a tad more weight than regular vinyl (I might have gone a little heavier still), and has a neat tension control to allow you to make it spin freely or grip like hell.
Is it a practical replacement? Of course it is. How can it not be? Two decks and a fully featured 2 channel mixer in one neat compact box. Many will find it hard to imagine life without 12" vinyl platters, but it really is possible to mix and scratch on units other than vinyl rocking Technics, as the Pioneer owned club scene demonstrates.
Nextlevelness? Hmmmm... it has all the features that exist already but in a much more efficient and compact metaphor. Rather than being forced into squeezing controls into the limited amount of space left on a small format VCI type controller, the NS7 has the luxury of keeping things in a normal and accepted 2 decks and a mixer layout. Waking up to it means you're immediately at home and can get into it right away.
Apart from the wonderfully named strip search, there's nothing individually new on the NS7, but it is the sum of it's parts that makes the NS7 a great unit. Familiar layout, real platters and controls, XLR outs and total simplicity all makes for a really complete unit that does the core of what DJs do, and does it incredibly well. So far anyway.
You know what this kinda reminds me of? 2 decks and a mixer.
will it fit the innofader?

33 rpm? or 45 rpm?

Is that a pair of Ultrasone ProDJs near the unit ? They would deserve a review as well. Seems like headphone gear gets forgotten in the middle of all these midi/dvs/maschine madness

The only use this unit has really is for mobile dj's. No club will carry this at all, they just wont. Clubs only carry cdjs' or techniques tables. Its not like you can buy this and expect that " if i learn the NS7 than when i go to a club they will have it as well" Its just going to be for bedroom djing and mobile djs who can bring this unit with them in a coffin. The vci 300 is so much better because you can bring that thing anywhere in your backpack. It just does not make sense to buy an extra luxurious controller unless its very portable and this unit does not appear to be that. What say you all?
There's a world of mobile DJs who routinely throw heavy gear in the back of their car/van every day and week. This is the perfect unit for them and for those bedroom jocks who just play for themselves.
I know for most of you guys FX aren't that big a deal, but the fact they don't have any is a deal breaker for me. I DJ in an industrial/electronic project in which my job consists of: running the backing trax, dropping/scratching samples and all sorts of filter & delay tomfoolery. I could put a kaoss pad or something on the output, but that would just effect the total mix, not giving me the amount of control I need.
Afraid I'll have to pass until ver 2.0...(Not that it's a big deal. I'm broke right now anyway)
Hey Giz, how about a head to head between the NS7 & Stanton's System?
quote:
"I just tried to get a quote for shipping... ouch. It's not going to Oz mate!"
So send it to me? 8) I can put it through its paces no problem

mixvibes cross with these

thats cool :D
@dVo: No, it's 14bit like I said it.
If u think this is too inconvenient you should try lugging around 2 STR8-150s along with a mixer, SL-1 etc.
cute.
but will it blend? :D
Ok.. I have an elephant in the room question.
Those buttons right @ the bottom! (play, pause, etc.)
They seem like they are placed in the *most* uncool location.
Isn't that asking for trouble when hands rocking back and forth accidentally hit pause?
How can you guys not see that?
All I can see is my hand rubbing the pause button, and my routine is screwed!
A totally symmetrical layout? i.e. The decks are mirror images with the left deck's pitch control on the left and the right deck's on the right. That's not good. No pair of decks in the world are like that.
quote:
"A totally symmetrical layout? i.e. The decks are mirror images with the left deck's pitch control on the left and the right deck's on the right. That's not good. No pair of decks in the world are like that."
All controllers are symmetrical - almost all DJ software is symmetrical as well. Had it been commercially viable to make individual decks in left and right hand pairs, I'm sure they would have been.
An idea that I've mentioned in these pages before - because controllers and CD decks don't depend on vinyl having to spin clockwise, why not have a proper spin reverse option on the NS7? If it were to be totally symmetrical, you could have one deck spin clockwise wise and the other anti-clockwise. Sounds crazy, but would be nice as an option.
Giz,
If you have TS Pro, try it for me and let me know how it works.
I have one on order so I can record mix shows when I'm away from home or on tour/doing shows and don't have a conventional setup to use.
I don't know when these will hit Canada because no one can provide me any proper information yet.
Let me know how it works.
Thanks
Oh my god to solve their overheating problems they simply putted some fans? Sorry but it seems pretty stupid to me. They are the only gear manufacturer to have to implement somme fans to hide the fact that they cannot dimmension correctly a motor and their power transistors to control them.
Not having gotten a chance to try these yet im very much looking forward to your reports Giz

On first glance the do seem spectacular

What? Do you prefer HUGE radiator or liquid cooling instead?
I just wonder how big noise are they making..
newb question: Can you you hook up to your PC speakers? or does it have to connect to a receiver or something?
quote:
"All controllers are symmetrical"
Not true, Giz. Just look at the M-Audio Xponent. That's set up like a regular pair of decks with the pitch control on the right of each jog wheel.
Hi Guiz, can you tell us a word about overall sound quality ? Is it worse or better than the old SL-1 ? Do you have the ability to make a sound comparison with the opponent VCI-300 ?
Thanx!

Hey giz. Is the height correct on this one? Sure is a bigass box!
@Serato Sam or Any Numark Rep.
I been cruisin' various sites about this hardware and this is the FIRST time i'm hearing about the fan. I purchased the C-(Crappy) D-(Darn) X-(Xcuse), and right out the box, The FIRST time I used them, I had the "Loading Issue" which I didn't hear about until 3 months down the road. My question, No disrespect to My Man Giz (Big Up for mentioning the fan existed) Are we getting the unbiased version or the "Help me sell a million units and i'll give you a free one" version? The world economy is in shambles and $1300 is no joke. I'm purchasing one at launch because it just what I need for my style (Moble). I want the Real "ISH".
nice work Giz Keep it up
Chewy - I must have had a moment of typing tourettes, It's 90x60x30cm.
DjSteveMixx - what you get from me is my hand on heart honest opinion. When I review, it makes no difference to me if I get to keep it or not. I just want the best gear in the marketplace and if there's a few technological casualties along the way, then it's up to the manufacturers to bring out better gear.Numark know this, as does every other manufacturer.
For me it's great that the NS7 looks like a nice piece of work but the selling point for me is that Serato is involved. I hardly think they would be involved in this if they had any hesitation about the quality of the hardware Numark was going to bring to the table.
People hated on Stanton for years and maybe sometimes deservedly so but you will be hard pressed to find a better turntable than the STR8-150, so miracles do happen

As for the fans, we're not talking about 2 individual units but 2 high-torque platters in one unit. Maybe there is a better way to cool the unit but perhaps fans were the best solution to keep the price down. This is essentially 2 mini TTX-1s and a 57SL-like mixer in one unit plus all of the MIDI stuff in a self-contained unit. If somebody comes along and makes a better one more power to them. A comparable Stanton setup will cost almost 3 times as much.
In this market I'm sure Numark knows they can't afford to mess this up.
And I'd like to add I have never seen Giz "fake" a review. If something needs to be improved or it's a total piece of crap, I've never seen the Skratchworx crew pull punches when reviewing a product.
OK just got back from a central london DJ shop and I had a 10 min go on it. For the record I DJ 4/4 music on Serato with 1210's. No scratching.

Love the "everything is on the unit and you dont even need to use the mouse anymore" philosophy of the product. It's very simple and easy to use.
What I didnt like were the buttons especially PLAY/PAUSE, CUE, LOOPS, etc, they are of the soft plastic/rubber kind. I prefer buttons like on CDJs, because I like to TAP them in rhythm and be sure that they've been pressed. With the soft plastic ones sometimes my impulse didnt go through and I missed drops, etc.
Also, I'm used to the pitch slider on the left deck to be on the right, close to the mixer. This time it's mirrored. Slightly annoying, as I'm right handed, but after a few days' use I'm sure I could get over it.
10 minutes didnt give me enough time to properly assimilate the touch of the motorized platter but again, its something I'd get used to in hours/days. I found them slightly less precise and "harder" than CDJ or vinyl platters, but I just realized that they must have been on "hard/modern setting" rather than on the "soft classic one".
Finally, I'd like to read more about the circuitry and the EQs. Being an Allen & Heath buff, I suspect the NS7's circuitry and EQs won't be as good/precise etc...
Looking forwards to NS7 mkII or something like that...then it will be a very interesting piece of gear for home use and mobile DJing!
quote:
"And I'd like to add I have never seen Giz "fake" a review. If something needs to be improved or it's a total piece of crap, I've never seen the Skratchworx crew pull punches when reviewing a product."
Agreed. Has never happened and never will. 8)
It's really the beatjuggling performance I'm interested in, as that would make it a suitable tool even for doing routines. I've seen some simple demo videos but nothing that really showed complex juggling patterns. Also, nobody has really said much about sticker drift (or the lack thereof).
Hopefully one of the stores near me will have a demo unit that they'll let me try. (or Giz will somehow get me a unit for further testing, hint hint)
Still one question i want answered and possibly a video of...can you use this to controll either Virtual Dj or PCDJ VJ - I want to see this in use doing video djing...if it does...id buy one right now.
I currently use and m audio xponent with PCDJ VJ for video mixing...but NS& would b the Sh!t
quote:
"Finally, I'd like to read more about the circuitry and the EQs. Being an Allen & Heath buff, I suspect the NS7's circuitry and EQs won't be as good/precise etc..."
this is all done internally. the ns7 consists of knobs and buttons, the software reads those knobs and buttons and calculates the audio signal (incl. eq's etc) on the computer side. this should also explain the increases CPU requirements.
Don't get me wrong Giz... I Trust I been following your page for the last 2 years and trust your judgement. Thats why I said I haven't heard about the fan until you mentioned it. I was just making sure Serato Sam or the Numark reps. that might be here, to give us a chance to get an unbiased review from other means also.
Like I've said before, Numark are under no illusion that the world is watching them, and many will be hoping or expecting them to fail. This is why they've taken their time to make sure that the NS7 is as good as it can be out of the box.
I haven't played with it long enough to see if there's anything spectacularly wrong, but I've yet to find anything that I would say is even mildly offensive. There are things that could be done differently, but that's down to personal preference.
One pie in the sky idea I did have aside from the reverse spin one is related to the strip searches. When I was juggling, I found myself doing the waveform watch routine, and it struck me that the NS7 could incorporate LCD strips next to the platters showing the wave form. At the press of a button, these could switch between the expanded waveform and the whole track, so that you could jump around the song needle drop style visually. I'm not saying that it should have any amazing scratch response like the previously seen touch screen DJing, but as a visual reference, this would almost completely stop screen watching.
Too late to add that in now, but perhaps in some other ITCH based creation, this would work very well indeed.
to giz,
reverse spin....

i think you can do what your talking about with vdj, if they have the platters mapped, wich i dont think but, vdj has a reverse audio in the settings, so if you play the platter in reverse but reverse the audio, in concept....it should work.
can you set sticker at 12 oīclock and use that in an old school way of jugglinī or do you really NEED to watch the screen all the time through the routine?!
I can confirm that Gizmo is completly independant - if he was in the manufacturers pocket and gave out skewed advice in return for favours, you guys and galls would soon see through him and leave the site. If anyone is in any doubt There are examples on the site of him giving us a good kicking if you care to look.
And yes ...sorry Giz the NS7 will be coming back!
thatīs all fine jon@numark and i strongly believe in your words

but why didnīt you take your time to answer my question. i could be your next happy costumer

quote:

eq's are on the software part (we may have more details on the Serato forum) but what about the hardware part ?
NS7 = soundcard if I'm not wrong.
many questions and no answers

Indeep,
Yes, you can mark the vinyl and beat juggle away without having to look at the screen.
so no cue drifting. thatīs good to hear

potential buyer over here

quote:
" On March 16, 2009, indeep commented...

That's exactly what I'd want to hear from Numark; saying you can put stickers and beat juggles without lookig at the screen doesn't mean the same thing as "no sticker drift at all"...
Since nobody trusts the Numark rep, if he said "no sticker drift" people still wouldn't believe him anyway. Funny people will grill a rep and then still not trust their anyway. So I guess we'll just have to wait for Gizmo's review. Or until the more daring types get their NS7 next week.
I didn't know sticker drift was such a common term!
The NS7 has no sticker drift, someone has graciously offered to post a youtube. Coming soon.
ok sorry i think i got the terms wrong

coul someone @ numark describe how to set up stickers and cue points properly with the ns7, is it similar to the procedure using numarks cdx?
thank you

Ms Pinky has 14 bits midi pitchbend sysex resolution and OSC too.
How many times I need to wrote it in this forum?
...
i donīt think a semi-professionel software like ms pinky will work together with numarks high speed midi controller ns7!
Mudo - Ms Pinky is now on the list for the new reviews team to cover. We should have done it before but there were so many products and only a few reviewers to look at them.
isnīt ms pinky the same as torq?
@Gizmo, how's that scratching and juggling video coming? Your fans would LOVE to hear your comments on if you could actually prefer the NS7 over your TTs and mixer.
Also, any impressions on how practical the NS7 is for mobile work - have you actually taken the NS7 out of the house?
@indeep, Torq uses Ms. Pinky as the DVE engine/external-control mechanism. The rest of Torq is above and beyond Ms. Pinky.

Thanks for the reassurance, This was by no means was a knock on Giz or Skratckworx. But I been in the game for 25 + and all I want is a good product that works. This is my profession and I have a job to do. I want to tools I choose to use to be reliable no more, no less. Thanks Jon@Numark.

@ The Numark reps,
Would an application such as Traktor Scratch Pro require a plug-in for proper platter support or some kind of translator app?
id like to ask, again....
Is it possible to use the rca aux line in(in the front) and the both output as an fx send/return for external fx pod's/samplers/pedals?is it an option to assign that in itch?
again,if you cant you guys should really offer this.
i think the grand wizard of giz will answer all our questions soon

quote:

correct. the soundcard should be (obviously) built into the NS7.

...
Indeep Ms. Pinky is done in MAXMSP "these holy crap shit" that Ableton is going integrate in its version 8.
Also is SDK, make her better yourself but don't forget something...
100 euros = Videoscratching, Midi and OSC out, MAXMSP and open hardware...
many of these since 5 years ago...
You are right, Serato is so pro because now is developing a maxmsp patch to become like... Ms. Pinky.
About NS7, is better than your regular one TT? I have an non-professional Ms. Pinky set for 100 Euros doing MORE than the 1500 Euros Numark/rane solution and... I couldn't use my set or regular vinyl?
Yes Yes... so pro!
Ms. Pinky is NOWADAYS the only solution which integrate all at the lowest price.
Do you want more power, give a hand.
Friendly,

what the hell is an MAXMSP??!
could you clear that up for me. i have never before heard of thet!
thank you

Checking the web site and they say can to do this
They say the aux. plugs directly into master outputs and gain controls volume.

Can you post a beatjuggling video Giz?
reading through that link DJSteveMixx posted, looks like you could in fact use an external effects unit... mmmmm
I don't see myself buying this in the near future (been burned by a Numark HDX, so I'm weary, and I dont have the space, also too much other gear, ns7 currently out of my price range...), but if I ever do, I'll probably try to use it with Traktor Pro (instead of the vci-100)...
I'll check it out on Monday night when Numark has a demo at my local Guitar Center... can't wait to see it in action.
http://gc.guitarcenter.com/numark-ns7/
Beat juggling? Moi? If I must. Actually, the NS7 has reignited my interest in juggling. I'm not that good, but this makes me feel like I'm better, especially when I throw hot cues in there too.
Honestly this thing is a hoot. It's made it into my list of "stuff I really don't wanna send back".
you could tell numark it broke while testing and that itīs the crap people expected with numar :P
...
Hi Indeep,
MaxMsp is an visual enviorement for objected orienting developing.
Do you Reaktor? Maxmsp is the wet dream for Native Instruments... and It is the BEST new from ABLETON LIVE CYCLING 74 parthnership (google a bit please).
At the end of this year you could scratch Ableton Live entirely using Ms. Pinky.
It is not possible today because LIVE is not ready. Ms Pinky is wainting and giving meetings (in digital domain) with other appz like VDMX or Resolume AVENUE...
Semi-pro? check the latest version (it is a beta and seems more estable than ever) is sending high res (and low) Midi data and OSC data.
You could use your turntable for controlling everything MIDI mappeable.
Did you ever scratched a reverb? wait for Serato if you prefer...

...
I had a cut on it the other night and was surprised how good it was.
Obviously it's not exactly the same as full size turntables but it only took a minute to adapt. I could even do subtle record stuff like one handed thumb swipes. Having said that I have got tiny hands so if you got slabs of meat hanging off your wrists you might not get on with it so well...
I'd say for party rocking DJs who scratch mix it's spot on, hardcore turntablists won't be looking at it anyway.
As you can see from the picture there's quite a lot of clear space around the platter so it'd be easier to make it bigger, plus they could take the slope off the edge of the platter to make it bigger. I reckon they could get a 10 inch platter on without making the overall unit bigger - if they do that it might even be an option for more serious scratchers...
Saw the demo tonight at guitar center, could have bought one from the mountain of units they had... but didn't...
for the hour i stayed (1/2 hour live demo, 1/2 hour q&a) the unit seemed solid, all the cuts/scratches/juggles were on point, but the q + a's were all stuff i already knew about (thanks

) the unit i got to touch (wasn't plugged in) felt really nice but i just couldn't buy it for a few personal reasons (It's not supported by Traktor yet (via hack or official update, i don't care), no fx section (i know, dumb reason because itch doesn't have fx), would have to sell off gear to make space - it sure is big!, the economy is in the sh*tter.
Interesting concept, though now im not too sure if the booth out/aux in could be used for external fx - think it would create a loop in the sound (mixing an FX'd signal with more FX) creating feedback with some fx...
if i were flush with cash, did lots of "outside my bedroom" gigs, and didn't care about having 2 different DJ systems to master - i would be spinning on this thing right now...
They Lied to someof us with the promise of a releaseon 3/24/09 but I paid my money and left the store with nothing but the bullshit receipt from when I paid for it. why should I beleive tomorrow will beany different? I should get $50 back everyday it dosen't show up!!!
Hey jus got my NS7 and am having trouble installing the software. Once installed still telling me that hardware is disconnected. Anyone know why this may be? If so please email mrbwheeler@comcast.net Thanks
