Leaner - meaner - better

After a few days of one step forward and 2 steps back (essentially me pressing the wrong button), the latest version of is alive. It's streamlined and offers a little more than it did before. There's more to come but the rest of the changes will trickle through in the coming weeks.

A new lick of paint

skratchworx is undergoing a facelift, so things won't be as they should be for a little while. But when it's finished, it'll look a lot better. It's the news and comments that are feeling the bulk of the work right now. One big change is comment verification via Captcha. Now you'll have to enter a code to confirm your comment. This is vital as some of the more popular news stories i.e. those linked to all over the net, attract some really annoying and frankly vile spam. It's a small price to pay.

Anyway - sorry for the glitches in performance. Please bear with me....

We've teased it, previewed it and generally rubbed your nose in possibly the coolest MIDI controller out there - and now you can buy it. That is, if you live in the UK anyway.

Switchin' for a scratch

Sometimes, the easiest and simplest ideas are overlooked in the pursuit of next level gadgetry. It's all well and good being able to scratch, mix, sample and generally pull digital rabbits out of your DJ hat with the plethora of laptop based solutions, but what about when you turn up at a gig and need to switch your setup with the current DJ? Hmmm.... dead space between DJs while you rewire - not good for keeping the hot and sweaty crowd bopping and jiving or whatever you kidz do these dayz. Magma's Switchbox is such a simple idea but so needed.

REVIEW: Vestax QFO LE

Review catchup time. After delving into the inner thoughts of DJ Qbert, Vestax made his mad scientist idea into a real product - the one man band turntable QFO. But for many, this was a tad too wallet breaking so the powers that be took a long hard look at the daddy model and shaving some bells and whistles off, the QFO LE was born. Pedestrian's Markski is the proud owner of such a deck and scribbled down his thoughts about his purchase. He did this some 8 months ago so instead of gorging myself on chocolate as one should do at Easter, I decided to pull my finger out and make up the review. Sorry for the delay Mark!

Could the be any cooler?

It's fair to say that all the good stuff that you guys are interested in at the shows tends to be on the larger stands. The big boys can afford the prime real estate and their gear gets the bulk of the attention. But taking a little time to mooch around the edges of the show often yields gold and the Mawzer DIY MIDI controller is one such find.

Before and After

Having witnessed the greatness of the soon to be released Mackie d.4 (now with the Pro tag) at PLASA, the gathered team commented on the fader area being cramped. Indeed Idlemind managed to sustain a non-life threatening cut to his finger on one of the encroaching knobs but being a nice guy, decided not to sue Mackie into bankruptcy. But like the advice we gave Mackie about the d.2 before it, the d.4 has undergone a small but important change, making the d.4 Pro better and less likely to leave you permanently crippled. The power of the e-press strikes again. Oh and I have pictures, info and prices for the d.2 Pro and d.4 Pro as well, for those who have been waiting and waiting and waiting...

Korg Zeros ain't zeros

Korg aren't exactly known for their DJ products. Granted - the KAOSS pads have found favour amongst DJs, but they're not full on DJ fodder. So when they come out with a series of DJ mixers, you'd be forgiven for not necessarily sitting up and taking notice. But then you see them, it's incredibly hard... well let's leave it at that. The Korg Zero series were first seen at NAMM and heralded as an orgasm inducing product and quite rightly so . But that's not enough for Korg - hell no. They had to go and make mixers with KAOSS pads built in, with the 2 and 4 channel KM202 and KM402 respectively.

Allen & Heath's xone:02 has to be the most slept on scratch mixer in existence. It's only now, several years after it's introduction that heads are discovering the greatness of said mixer for themselves, perhaps due in some part to my somewhat glowing review. Capitalising on this, A&H are relaunching it, complete with the wonderful Pro X Fade AS STANDARD and also offering a custom faceplate service to boot.

Imagine that you've got software sooooo good that just about everyone wants a slice of it.
FEATURE: Vestax VCI-100

With the MIDI controller market hotting up considerably, there seems to be a clear favourite - the not in any way plastic Vestax VCI-100. And of course, it would be remiss of us if we didn't throw our journalistic toys out of our pram and demand that a unit be shipped to us right away. 4 days late isn't right away (yeah I'm talking to you ) so I ended up with a little over 2 days play before it went off to another equally gear hungry magazine (Paul - mail me&#33.
Stanton play musical chairs

In a change to the advertised program, will, from time to time, report industry news. We at Towers feel it is our responsibility to keep you informed of industry movers and shakers, who's hiring and importantly who's firing. We hope this will bring you closer to the people who keep you gear junkies doped up to the eyeballs with wallet breaking next gen DJ stuff.

So let's start this off. After spending a certain amount of time in the manufacturer wilderness, Stanton have announced some sweeping changes at the top of the corporate food chain. After appointing a new CEO and President - Timothy Dorwart and Mike Quandt respectively - the guys have made a number of promotions to breathe some life back into the company. Let's hope they can start to bring us some kick ass gear again.

But as you might expect, we have one, but only for the briefest moment in time. It's now Thursday morning and it must go back on Monday. So it's fair to say that anything I write about it can't really be classed as a review as such, more of a first look at a pre-production model.
Finally hanging with the cool cats

Sometimes, you shouldn't look a gift horse in the mouth. One such gift horse is Youtube. So rather than keep getting stupid bandwidth bills, I've decided to use Youtube's and have set up a growing catalogue of footage, both old and new. As and when I think of some old movie I've taken, I'll upload it for you guys to relive past times, and to see some seriously high quality scratch action.

EVO5 Ecler teaser

Coming up to MusikMesse, there's always a degree of info seeping out from manufacturers and here is one that does little more than count down until the opening doors of MusikMesse. Ecler clearly have something in the works with what will probably be a series of next generation mixers, the first of which is the EVO5.

TTX - now with added USB (I think)

In what can only described as the vaguest official release I know of, Numark has sort of announced a new TTX turntable. There have been rumours around for a little while but nothing concrete. Thus I have no pictures, specifications or release date but I do at least have the go ahead from Numark to tell you that the new TTX will incorporate USB - we think just USB audio out and costing you an extra £30.

When the Pro X Fade hit the market, all other competitors knelt at it's greatness. Yet at the same time, we all spontaneously puked marvelled at the vomit coloured unique brown/green fader cap. But now instead of having to mod an Ecler or Rane cap to fit, Ebsel have now brought forth a rather more conventional black and white fader cap for the less adventurous DJs out there. Available now from the Ebsel online shop for the paltry sum of £1.50 plus postage. That is all.

The Vestax PMC-280 - 4 channels, effects and everything!

It's kind of frustrating being in the hallowed position of respected and trusted DJ hacks. We get to see and hear of things that we'd just love to share but can't. One such thing is the new Vestax PMC-280 4 channel mixer with effects. Spending time in the Vestax suite at PLASA, we witnessed the current crop of Vestax releases and then sat next to the shiny new VCI-100 (which arrives in the skratchlab next week) we spotted this beautiful beast of a mixer, and now thankfully we can talk about it.

Here we go...

Well you saw this coming right? Yesterday, Stanton issued a carefully worded statement with a not so subliminal message which as we all expected, royally pissed off Native Instruments. Now after no doubt storming around Berlin for a while and sticking pins into voodoo dolls, NI pulled out their finest diplomatic dictionary and have issued a counter statement that hopefully will make things a little clearer.

So we've seen the dissolving of the partnership between NI and Stanton and their respective and quite different product announcements at NAMM. But the thorny issue of Intel Mac compatibility for FS2 still rears it's ugly head. Did Stanton leave Intel packing Mac users high and dry? Read on for some carefully crafted words from Stanton.

If you weren't at or haven't seen Netik's breathtakingly awesome DMC winning set, then you haven't witnessed the greatness of French scratch musician Le Jad. Taking a unique approach to making battle sets, Netik and Le Jad teamed up to create an audio onslaught of breathtaking proportions. You may also remember Le Jad's first outing "Doll's Breaks" - the one with the nightmare inducing cover - well now it's time for the sequel called "Nervous Shock", with a slightly less creepy cover but still containing an audio wave of non-stop energy.

It's a funny time of year. NAMM has been and gone and a whole lot of hot goodies where unveiled. But literally a matter of weeks later, the biggest music show in the rest of the word - MusikMesse in Frankfurt - sees a slow but increasing trickle of new info seeping out from PR departments, official or other wise. Once such small release is a dual CD drive for the soon to be released DN-HD2500 unit.

Despite being a technology focussed site, does from time to time received goodies of an audio and video nature and I feel it's my social responsibility and just good manners to share them with you as well. The first of these is from Bay Area DJ Teeko. Having done the battle scene and walked away from it discontented, he worked hard to create his unique sound and that can be heard in full effect on "My Soundstation".

More from the NAMM floor

As we all know, I came oh so close to making it to NAMM this year, but despite my absence, still managed to come up with all the hottest and most detailed news, before anyone else and straight from the source. Thankfully, just before NAMM started, CA local guy Peter Mapanao stepped up to the plate and donned his deputy badge (well NAMM press pass) and spent a day trawling stands to deliver you guys more pics from the event. But there's even more to come - Peter hooked up with his buddy Phillip Le and spent the last day filling in a few of the gaps and capturing some video. That's on it's way later, but for now, check the gallery.

DJs become Wiijs

Waaaay back in March 2005, we posted a story about HP's DJammer - a wireless handheld controller. Depending on your viewpoint, this was either an amazing next level evolution of the DJ's artform or a massive heap of gimmicky crap. Well now you can judge again because Nintendo's Wii controller has now become another way to control Traktor. The problem is that unless you can move like JT, you're destined to look like your parents dancing at a party, and no amount of dope chooons is gonna let you get away with it.

Up for grabs are www.2turntables.com, .org and .info while Lee Jackson, the owner of the sites and all round nice guy will be keeping his 2turntables.co.uk blog running.
REVIEW: Numark iCDX

From time to time, a product comes along that changes things forever. One such product was the Numark CDX. This was the ultimate in making our new and enormous digital collections sound and feel like real vinyl. So it came as no surprise (well it was actually) when Numark did what all the hip people do and tagged an "i" in front of the name and brought forth a deck that embraces MP3 (and only MP3 mind) even more and allows you to plug almost every USB device known to man into it and play the music contained on it. Perhaps not as ooooh and aaaah as the CDX but the Numark iCDX does quite a lot and does it well.

OK - big apologies to Mackie for the late posting of this. My mail app has become a tad over-jealous in the spam filtering department and this most clearly doesn't fall into that category.

There's a world of battle wax out there, full of disses to reduce your opponent to a quivering heap of jelly in front of a crowd who are equally ripping the piss out of you as well. But I wonder how that goes down in Polish? Well if you're so inclined, you can find out at the Skrecz.com Battle 2007. For those not in the know, skrecz.com is the premium site for turntablism in Poland. Absolutely indecipherable for non Polish readers, but looks hot nonetheless.
