I racked my addled creative brains to come up with a snappy yet cheese-free headline for this story - Torq of the town, Torq is cheap etc, but the one I picked seems to sum up the current state of play. M-Audio's Torq/Conectiv combo is hot property right now, and also DJ rocking horse shit as well. They just can't make enough of them to fulfil the public's craving for the new digital goodness. This is of course somewhat annoying for scratch hacks like us as we don't get to fondle this stuff as soon as we'd like as all units are headed to retailers.
But while the M-Audio droids beaver away putting Torqs and Conectivs into boxes, the M-Audio web monkeys have been busy getting lots of stuff online for you.
Firstly, there's a whole new
Torq domain, complete with product news, a forum and support details as well. There's also a
new promo video on the M-Audio site as well as a number of Torq demos up on Youtube too - check
this one out.
And I'll finally be able to lay my hands on it at the
Music Live show on Friday. All being well and provided I can fight my way through crowds of marauding school kids, I'll grab some footage as well.
At Ģ200 you may as well buy 3.
woo that girl did a scratch that all guys cant do unless there fat lol in the vid

That's it, getting one in 2 weeks! By the way the street price in Canada is almost the same as is usd: 312$!
Got mine in the US and I'm just about ready to do a full live test so if you in London on Friday the 3rd of November pop over the Bar Vinyl, 6 Inverness St, Camden from 7pm for some Hip Hop and Torq DJ madness!
Peace
im going to get mine next check and i hope to use it for the peview
show of 92.1 power sessions ^_^ (lol its the peview cuse i dant have the cash to put it on live365.com
the more i see these videos and demos, the more im itching to try and buy the product myself...i guess it's good i held out on the ssl...
same here

Could someone clear this up for me. I have read on M-Audio's website you can't use hardly any of their products if you have Windows Media Center Edition wich I got with my new computer. But then someone said they use some software from M-Audio on their MCE and it works.

How about "Torq to the hand"?
I got this a couple weeks ago. It's been okay so far, but my computer is just a little sub-par in terms of recommended processor speeds. I've had fun with it so far though, it does really work well.
"a number of Torq demos up on Youtube too - check this one out."
goddamn good times again! AAArrrRgh!!
Everyone beware there are 2 packages being sold right now (one with the needed vinyl/CDs controllers and one package without). I just recieved my package today without any controllers at the same price as the package with controllers($299).So for those of you who are planning on buying one make sure the store outlines with or without controllers (Because American Musical Supply is not telling you anything about it)
Looks cheap. And why go with USB?
Sorry Veezie but M-Audio & all distributors and webpages make that pretty clear. If you have any friends with it, and you use CDs, get them to make an image?
USB 1.1!? Am I the only one concerned?
I sold mine again, had it for about two weeks with control vinyls. it is a really cool product for coming fresh out of the lab, the scratch performance is really good, when it works.
But I had massive skipping problems in absolute mode, itīs way too sensitive towards needle dirt and noise. I had to go for new needles first to get it to work with absolute mode. the old needles which worked well with serato, didnīt work for torq in absoulte m. this has nothing to do with my ibook(g4 1,33 ghz 1.5gig ram) since absolute worked perfect with cdjs. torq switched often from absolute to relative itelf when I was juggling round the beginning of the timecode signal.
I took it to the club three times and overall it was performing good, but relative mode only, skippings in absolute mode with fresh needles. I tested M44-7s and Ortofons, ortofons worked slightly better but still massive skippings.
the software was freezing at least one time per 5 hour set: I did get the spinning wheel of death which didnīt stop until I shut down torq. No audio dropouts though during software freeze. the song kept playing but I had to switch to normal vinyl cause I couldnīt select anything on the software. this also happend once as I searched my library (which takes long).
another bug I had was when I put on a new song in relative mode, while the record was still moving a little bit, torq played the song backwards in a loop or something until I loaded the song again to the deck.
the keylock is integrated too bad... you have to do about three clicks to get it straight, not like your master tempo on your cdjs. this is a pain in the ass!! I was hoping for this to work the normal way. check out nemonicīs posts on djforums.com on this issue.
but donīt get it wrong, I had great fun with this thing too, in combination with a trigger finger itīs a lot of fun to use the loops, effects and sampler. this can introduce a new way of djing. I like the quickscratch function a lot!
if m-audio manages to straighten out the basics like needle sensitivity and keylock, this will be a great tool and a competitor to which serato has to step up. I sold it because of my problems in absolute mode and because I still trust my serato which didnīt mess around a single time in over a year now.
Re: the comments on USB, its fine for sample/bitrates of 44.1/16. They use it cos its the buffer is fine for that amount of data and its cheaper to implement. not to mention way more accessible to the market.
Do people think this will force rane/serato to address some of their issues. i think its a given that they will include VST support for effects in the near future, and their looping REALLY needs addressing. however, its solid and really the only one id trust in a performance environment at the moment.
does anyone feel this will force the price of ssl down too?
my biggest problem with torq the interface looks like a freaking kids toy. Oh well pretty superficial.
so far then its looking like:
if your gig depends on it serato is the least cpu-taxing and most stable, although its finally looking a little pricey
if you are wanting to 'push the envelope' then torq has hella functions, for cheap, at the risk of some early adoption kinks (i'm guessing if this thing is as big as it seems to be sales-wise then they will HAVE to be quick on the bugfixes? hello? final scratch anyone?)
if you are clinically insane, use cd's
oh btw usb 1.1 is what serato uses - i think for the 4-lane io stream that it deals with it was not considered an issue - and they should know! my guess is m-audio took note...
I own Torq and while it does have some minor issues, it is amazing how stable and well thought out the program is. It is version 1 and we all know that there will be some bugs and kinks. Look around at different sites and you don't see that many complaints about Torq crashing which is a testament to how solid the core is.
I have Torq also, got it for the steal $199 price from GC. I have mixed feeling about Torq. I like the features, but I agree the GUI looks too toy-ish and Virtual DJ-ish for me. And some of the "skins" are just way too bright or dark or just flat out awful color combinations that're harsh on the eyes. Luckly, although not implictly stated how, you can design your own skin/colors. This skin files are just text files and use simple RGB color code. I don't like the 1/2 waveforms, especially coming off from SSL. They just look like mono-colored globs on the screen and don't really tell any info about the song. Latency is not quite as low as SSL but pretty close (about 9-10ms on lowest settings). The file browser database sucks horribly. Some users are experiencing long 15-20 minute startup times for Torq as it tries to loads its database. No ID3 editing capabilities and Torq doesn't read some tags either (like BPM tag for example). As stated the key lock works in a strange way. And overall I don't feel that the vinyl control is quite as good as SSL's. Noticable artifacting when moving the control vinyl at slow speeds. I also get random audio ticks/jumps in the sound, not dropouts, but very minute skips. My songs are fine audiowise and I have a Macbook so it's more than suffice to run Torq. Although the Conectiv interface does put out a much louder sound than SSL. You also don't need 4 inputs on your mixer to play regular vinyl and Torq, unlike SSL and FS2. Just turn the big knobs to play regular vinyl/CDs. You can also hook up one CDJ and one turntable for control, something you can't do in SSL. The built-in effects are ok, pretty much your standard DJM600 ones, but you really want a MIDI controller for messing around with them, no fun with the mouse. You can also add effects to your real vinyl/CDs. VST effects are definitly cool and provide an almost unlimited supply of effects. But the big letdown is that ReWire does NOT work in vinyl control mode at all. So sorry, Torq is not the missing link between vinyl control and Ableton, looks like you're going to have to get that Red Sound SoundBite Micro after all.
So yeah, overall for $199, I can't complain. But until a lot of things get worked out, Torq is strictly bedroom use only. I'll leave the real gigs to my tried and trusted SSL. Will Torq become the "next SSL?" At this point, IMO, not a fat chance, especially for the scratch heads. While Torq has all these "features," a lot of the simple things that make SSL great and highly succesful, are just not there in Torq. Quoting someone (I think Gizmo

) "tis better to do one thing really well, than many things not so well" (or something like that). Will SSL lower its price? I don't think so. But they will definitly have to get the ball rolling with some much need additions.
Well my PC isn't that up to date, and considering the bugs everyones talking about, I'm seriously considering Mixvibes...
can someone tell me what Torq is!? Is it better than Serato SL?! I got the 600 bucks for Serato but Im not sure if torq would be better... Money isnt the problem, so can any of yall tell me what I should go for?! In my opinion the thought of SSL doesnt sound as sketchy as Torq but I dunno. Aight holla, peace collie
One more issue that has not been addressed is that SSL upgrades/updates are free, TORQ may or may not be! if the upgrades are not free in TORQ then SSL is the clear winner in the long run

Just to clear things up, the new update (Torq 1.01 .exe) fixed the above problems....and yes updates are free. The update was released oct. 18Th. Torq was released to the public around Oct.4th.....so lets see,....2 weeks for the first fix?....not bad IMO. So at the rate they are going now, I think they'll be gettin' this software hella tight
the best program if you have a pc is deffenantly VIRTUAL DJ , i dont have it, i have fs2, but when it comes out for the mac im getting it. I was SOOOOO all about torq until i went to the VDJ site. The software stability is fantastic and it has more features than most of the other programs. Plus the most incredible thing it has is Skins. LOTS and LOTS of skins, They even have a couple SSL skins but you still get the Horizontal wavforms and filters. They even have a CDJ skin that works just like a CDJ1000. You need to go check it out.
LOL @ WEAK!!
Got to say having just sat through 5 minutes of DJ revolution hitting the Trigger Finger i haven't seen anythin that makes me suddenly want this over Serato.
There's some nice stuff built into torq, like the ability to do live shogun edts and loop on the fly is a dream for me and my style of mixes... but having watched Rev do 5 minutes of "how many real! HHHHHHHHHHHHHip Hoppers hoppers!" it just made me realise people are just gonna go in to a trigger finger frenzy and it's gonna do everyones heads in...
Come on guys show us some Vid's like the Vid of Revolution cutting on Serato, or the Mixvibes stuff....
What a fag, What a fag. Dude, Its not abot ooh THE SKINS> its about THE LAYOUT AND FEATURE SET OF THE SOFTWARE, ITs about what the skins actually do, Not how they look, They are not just eye candy, They are functional. VDJ has something for everyone. Wether your a mix dj or a scratch dj or a mix and scrath dj. If you like CDJ1000s, or if you like Serato scratch, you have it. plus a shit load of other features. VDJ has the most features out of any program out there plus it has much nicer filter implimentation. It has an XY axis and more, And by the way , VDJ taking over from final scratch, Anything can take over from final scratch becasue no one even uses it. I own fs2 and even im going to be switching.
your last lines lost me.... vDJ taking over from final scratch, Anything can take over from final scratch becasue no one even uses it. I own fs2 and even im going to be switching.
why would you put down FS and then say yea... i have it (right after you call someone else a fag.... can we keep it clean?)
any ways i have VDJ... it's kewl has some kewl features especially the video manipulation and effects and now you can use it with serato .... but it is still not on SSL's level... i know i know you've heard it all before... but there's a reason it's tried and true and used by everyone (99% of professionals) who is serious about Vinyl emulation.
want to be a pro... use what the pros use -
RememberTorq is a version 1 product. Does it have issues? yes. Are they going to add more features as time goes on? yes. Could the interface look better? yes. Does SSL have midi? No. Does SSL have effects with buy a $1200 mixer? No. Do both programs rock? Absolutely. It's a great time for the "Laptop" DJ's and it's only going to get better. I have both and use both.
sorry for the fag,i get angry when i feel im being made fun of. Why not put down FS and say i have it. I have it so i know how shitty the software is. Dont get me wrong, The hardware is great, and so is Traktor 3, but FS the software is terrible. I Think VDJ is freaking crazy because it is the most versitile software out there. IM just mad that its not on mac. nd just because Its not huge means abseloutly nothinng. The pros use SSL because of the Big Turntable markers i think and stability. VDJ has an exact SSL Copy skin so bam your getting SSL PLUS you get a hole lot of better features. That was the point i was making. Plust it has other skins that are really cool like a cdj1000 skin that actually does everything a cdj can do only virtually. Ithink that is pretty cool.
Not bad, I just peeped this at a music store that I happened to stop at to look around and it was $300.00 for everything in the box - vinyl and cd's included. It says on the website that you can use third party software with it, so later on if I wanted to try something else like Mixvibes or something like that I would already have an interface (I don't make a lot of money). Does anyone know what the latency is on this thing?
> VDJ has an exact SSL Copy skin so bam your getting SSL PLUS you get a hole lot of better features.
No you aren't. You may be getting something that LOOKS like SSL...
> That was the point i was making. Plust it has other skins that are really cool like a cdj1000 skin that actually does everything a cdj can do only virtually.
If I wanted a CDJ1000 then I wouldn't feel that an onscreen virtual version was the same. It seems like you are trying to convince people that dressing something up to look like something else is good enough. All I would say to you is be careful if you ever visit Thailand!
dood, is that a fucking threat. What could you possibly do, are you going to give me a muay thai kick to the head. Go do what you homos in thailand do best and go molest some 12 year old boys. you be carefeull if you ever visit new york yo.
Latency?

"Latency?"

lol i dont think it was a threat, it was pointing out the well known fact that many dudes in Thailand dress and very much look like women
lmao. sorry but that whole a-hole/weaksauce debate is crackin me up. i especially like the thailand reference, i thought it was pretty obvious so i had no idea what threat a-hole was talking about. anyway...
i'm liking that there's some real world experience with torq in the comments. many of my questions have been answered all at once. still, i can't wait to see a side by side comparative review of all (at least the leading) vinyl control software products. i was unfortunate enough to buy into the first FS and i've never been satisfied...and it's kept me from diving blindly into another product.

to clear it up this is not fixed. I loaded the update right after it was released and it changed nothing on the problem mentioned above. Also itīs not even mentioned in the bug fix list:
Cue Button Bug fixed
Snapshot Repeat Effect bug fixed
Scratches distortion bug fixed
Timestreching fixed when using Amputate Mode
Online Documentation added
Crossfader bug using snapshot Fixed
Analyzing Files on slow Mac--progress bar updated more often.
Optimization for MIDI incoming messages (repetitive quick cue and timecode display)
Repetitive Cue command Bug fixed
ok i got it now, i didnt understand befor what he was talking about , thought he was trying to say watch my back if i am ever in his home town of thailand because he thought i was dissing him or some stupid shit like that. my bad bro.
That chick's juggles sounded terrible and were out of time, but she used her boob to move the crossfader. I thought I had seen it all, but that just made me smile a bit...
TORQ has a great beat match function and seemed pretty stable for what I tested. I don't get the .1 US, it sounds out of the 90s or something.
There are a bunch of interesting posts here.
How do i make quote ?
cheers
99.9% of people who juggle, shouldn't.

I sold mine too. I use FS 1.5, please guys, even FS 1,5 is better than Torq. I purchased it first of all it was a M-Audio product, thinking that they don't make mistakes such a big company, also I'm very satisfied with Ableton live & Audiophile sound card too. But when It comes to digital djing, everything is vice versa !
First, Torq does't get full screen at all ! You have to see your windows start writing on the bottom + program bars until you hide the bar from control panel of Windows ! How come ?
Second, it is so slow. Even with old needles working with FS 1,5, it doesn't accept at all.
Third, sound quality, it's a real shit,
As a conclusion, don't make the mistake that I made, if you play digital way, get yourself a Scratch live like I would do.
HEY WHERE CAN I GET TORQ FOR $199?
This post is soooo locked because of spammers - again. Don't bother even trying to post in it.
