PLASA 2005 Day 1
Posted by Gizmo on 12-09-2005 02:19

After last year's damp squib that was PLASA 2005, I had high hopes for this year and I wasn't disappointed. I think everything we've seen today has been covered at some point in sw_smilie.png but nothing quite beats seeing for real. But I'm pretty wacked so I'm just going to give you a glimpse.

Vestax

A small stand for Vestax compared with everyone else but nonetheless it was crammed with new gear and French people - lots of French people in fact. It seems that Vestax is distributing MixVibes in the UK so the whole MV posse came to London, complete with Netik and Troubl to demo the new software suite. I'll grab some movies tomorrow but for now note this - MixVibes is now doing MPEG1 video. Read that weep SSL and FS2.

So starting from the top - the CDX-07 now makes an appearance. This is basically an CDX-05 that can record as well. A nice trick. I'll get more on this tomorrow.

Net up is the Controller1. Previously know as the Melody, this is the next level musical turntable designed by D-Styles and Ricci Rucker. Now appearing in gleaming piano black, the Controller1 is an interesting deck for sure. Aside from being a cracking scratch deck, it's also revolutionary in that it can play notes. The 8 buttons around the platter correspond to notes in a scale and can be played in major or minor key. It can be controlled by a footpedal or on the deck itself. But this is the most interesting and impressive - it can also be controlled by Midi. Check out this movie to get a better idea of how it works. A little note about the movie - in the foreground you can hear some regular Ahhh scratching - it's the beepy tone stuff behind that you need to listen to. It shows the little Yamaha box knocking out a beat and sending midi signals to the Controller1 to change the pitch. Availability should be "soon" with an estimated price tag of £1000.

The PMC-08 also made it's first public outing. This much more like a real update to the PMC-07 rather than the halfbreed mixer that was the 007. I'm just too knackered to run down the features but it does contain a new crossfader - the CF-CC. It's lag adjustable independently on either side and feels a lot better than the standard VCA. I'll get more on this tomorrow. And gone is the iPod feature. In the meantime, check out the hi res pic. No idea on price or availability.

And a new incarnation of the S1 guitar controller was on show. Now having an independent platter and no TTM1 device, this is planned to be very limited in production basically being made to order.

Numark

After busting the world exclusive (I love saying that) on the HDX, it was time to see it in the flesh. Well the first thing to note is that it's silver, the the dark colour the PDF I received indicated. And it feels might nice. Gone are the horrible thick rubber mats replaced with a softer felt one. One important feature is the swappable drive. A regular 2.5" drive is put into a caddy and can be removed at any time and replaced. But here's the bad news - the HDX will cost £1200. No - that's not a typo. This unit has been in development for 2 years and it's not a simple matter of putting a hard rive in a CDX. And it's this extensive R&D that you're paying for. I think it has to come in at under £1k for people to buy it in any quantity.

That's it for now. I'm barely conscious and must get some slee.... zzzzz

Good to see the iPod connections gone on the 08, what's the new crossfader like? How's overall build/sound quality?
How easilt changed is the HDX harddrive? Easy enough for one DJ to slide one out and the next to install theirs in the misddle of a set?

I think I'll stick with SSL.

for sure the HDX is geared towards clubs, as it makes it even more convenient than SSL/FS2 (no laptop needed)

I do not fully understand the whole using the keyboard to search for tracks shit.. and if you have to bring a keyboard.. you might as well be bringing a laptop..

Cool tho for club setups, so DJs could just drop in their 2 harddrives and get to mixing

Sorry for using mp4. Since the Tiger upgrade, Real or WMV encoding hasn't been possible. I'll try to get it fixed when I get home.

The HDX caddy is really easy to remove but it's a power down job.

And I apologise for putting the skratchworx logo on these images. Seems I get ripped off all the time with no credit so it's time to take action.

The less said about the Ortofons the better. That's my gorgeous hands on the QFO (I think). I tried rebalancing the tonearm but it didn't help. Whether they need a better 'break in' time or something, but initial thoughts were they didn't hold that well.

i was at plasa yesterday and i was impressed to see all this new kit, especially the hdx - i hope it can live up to the hype and be more reliable than the cdx.

my favorite piece of new equpiment tho was the mackie D2 scratch mixer. the faders on this thing were awesome plus it was built like a tank. the guy at the stand said it is to rival the ttm56 but be priced about the same as a hak360. this is definetly one to watch!

On 12-09-2005 12:26, Deft commented...
Yeah but after 2 years of consultation with the world's top dj's, Mackie still didn't manage to get a decent set of linefader curve choices.
Otherwise it was nice. The eq's had a lovely sound to them and the layout/look/feel was really nice - especially the Infinium fader (although the curve didn't seem as sharp as is trendy these days).

On 12-09-2005 13:10, djmadness commented...
deft - fair comment on the mackie, i didnt get a very long demo on it, but on first impressions it seemed really good.

i wanted to try out the EB pro x fader, but the stand was tiny (only 2 sets of decks) and far too crowded to get a go. mad.gif

How do you figure that? It's reliant on someone having a hard drive full of MP3's/WAV's that they can just unplug and take with them to the club.....

It's a nice concept and deffo a way forward, but only once it comes down in price. Then it may become a viable option, but for now, the Vinyl controllers of SSL/Final Scratch/MixVibes beatthis for club playing hands down....

I mean think about it, for the same price you get a Laptop and SSL whihc means you can control two sources(two bits of vinyl) as opposed to one on the Numark deck....

hey Giz, I just upgraded to Tiger the other day and realized that since I havent upgraded my ProTools 6.4 to 6.7 or 6.9.2 that I cant use it with Tiger. So then I go to the digidesign website and look for the upgrade. I see an upgrade to 6.9.2, but I would need to have 6.7 to get it for free. So then I go and look for the 6.7 upgrade and couldnt find it. I totally remember there being a free 6.7 upgrade for 6.4 users, but its not on there any more... ?

indeed, impressions from some DJs who are ridiculous cutters and have had them for a while have been not so glowing at all... hype is definitely a word that springs to mind.

overall tho there really wasn't that much to see/play with this year. shame but some of the few things there were quite interesting for sure. i really like the fact that mixvibes will allow for video control on the next version. that should make live shows hella more interesting in the future.

@lamont - where the hell was the scratchbox?

To all readers on this board...thank you for the support with Vestax and big-ups to Gizmo and Scratchworx, you guys are working too quick again. It looks like there are a few questions on this board, but here's what we can best supply you with. For the many projects we have coming up, like the controller one and 08, pricing will be determined soon. The controller one is what we see the turntable coming as close to an instrument as possible, time to make music. The 08, not done yet, still finishing things up, but it'll be one bad mf, designed and produced by over 30 of the best DJs from around the World. Fader is at nano technology, 2 effects per channel, etc etc.....too much to list...damn this sounds like a car commercial...later

On 13-09-2005 07:29, dj cross+fade commented...
mr vestax will that 08 come in the same black as ur controller 1 love.gif i was thinking about rane ttm 56 but ur making me go back to vestax ^_^ and will the sound be better than rane ?

On 13-09-2005 07:59, murj commented...
08 is dope. Digging the two efx loops. I've been thinking of it for a while now. I would like to see the update of the ttm56 to have two efx loops with dry/wet pans for each channel like the empath. The rack handels on the front pannel work well for protecting the fader curve pots.

I would love to see a picture or video of how the turntable guitar is held and used. This instrument is just so funny. Not saying any names, but I think that all those stupid rock bands with a dj should have to use them. I mean what a waste of R&D.

The concept behind the controller one is another thing i've discused with electronics buffs before. The only difference was that my idea had an actual 1 octave keyboard controler built into the table, but now, when i think about the idea, it might be better to just have an external midi controller. Now we can all be as good as Kid Koala.

Now one question i have for you lucky people who get to attend this dj adventure of epic proportions: How do you try stuff out without being drowned out by the next person trying something out next to you. I mean when im at the guitar center you either have to wait for the person on the microkorg to stop or else try to play with him (if he's keeping a beat). I mean i already get erked when the windsheild wipers don't match the tempo of the current track. A bunch of people messing with tons of unfamilar dj equipment in the same room seems very hard to make work.

hmmm, they would have had to employ some nano/micro/macro/jumbo technology for this to happen, given vestax scratch mixers 'reputation' for sound quality in the past, plus there's the rodec, urei, a&h, ecler and even mackie and pioneer to consider these days

Not sure in understand you jim...

On a side note I think it's a nice idea but in a box that size whats the point? Clubs are not gonna install these as standard, so basically unless you are prepared to lug it all about you can't use it for DJ'ing out...

The problem with all of this stuff is their is no conformity. every single manufacturer is trying to become the industry standard over a broad range of medium and thats not going to happen... the only uniformity in any of this is that these things manipulate sound..turntable to CD players to Digital scratch medium: they all do that one thing... the only consitent medium is vinyl or a portable Digital medium and for that it's looking largley like Serato and a laptop is coming out on top....

:/

oh well.... thats why Vinyl is holding up, because it's the one given consistency that you can use in everysingle club worldwide no matter what...

Exactly.... the all singing all dancing stuff is fine if it's taken for what it is. But for anyone with any real sense all you want is a product that does the simple, basic, things very well. I think that speaks to the punter more then anything else.

And Serato seems to have done just that, at least well enough to make it industry standard, and before anyone, or any reps, pipe up. Just tell me how many studio use vinyl based solutions or these hardware solutions as plug ins? Not many i'd wager.
