Having already covered the NUO5 with a review and posted info on the NUO2 and 3 in a previous new story, I was also keen to see the new NUO4 in action. Little information was available prior to MusikMesse other than being a cut down NUO4 but with midi. But we managed to get an overview movie (in progress) from Ecler and some pictures as well.
Sadly, the NUO2 and 3 weren't linked up to anything, but we've been assured that we'll be getting the 2, 3 and 4 in the very near future.
I'm not even going to try and explain the NUO4 in detail. Any more than 2 channels and I begin to get really confused. But from my layman's viewpoint, the NUO4 is a NUO5, with the effects ripped out and some rather nifty MIDI magic thrown in. As you can see from the pics, the middle section of the deck controls the MIDI and links to pretty much any Traktor/Ableton style software. By selecting the command you want in the software, you can assign that command to any of the 4 knobs with a total of 72 midi commands available. Aside from this, channels 2 and 3 can be used as midi controllers as well - duplicating the mixer controls in the software you're using.
The middle channel has a magnetic strip on it. Once you've assigned the midi commands, you can used software that will be available on the Ecler site that will print out small tabs that are inserted into the magnetic strip.
What my layman's eyes see is a mixer and laptop becoming your setup. The NUO4 is a really cool controller for the DJ software you run on your computer. Obviously it's so much more than that but this MIDI capability is the NUO4's trump card. Obviously, there's way too much going on with the mixer to be classed as a pure scratch mixer, but with the Eternal fader in there, and a clearer crossfader area than the NUO5, you have a mixer that fuses the digital age with your traditional mixing skills. And there's no reason why the more experimental scratch DJ shouldn't start pushing a few boundaries and incorporating some MIDI madness in their work.
Something to think about...
This is the SCLAT 200vs. Of almost no interest whatsoever to scratch heads but what struck me was the modular nature of the mixer. It's something that's been bounced around forums in the past for scratch mixers but to actually see the idea in the flesh does begin to make me think of the possibilities.
Good to see they have a rotary curve adjustment that covers all the upfaders - something the Nuo-5 could have really done with.
The big question is whether channels 2 or 3 can pass audio through them if being used as MIDI controllers.....would be good if they could.
hey hey - now we are talking midi wise!! i wonder if they would do either a 2 channel mixer with all controls midi'd, as that would be perfect for djing with ableton/traktor. i currently use an a&h xone92 plus a bcf 2000 midi controller, this mixer kind of covers what i do right now.
id love to see that nuo 4, everything midi'd on it and hell, even some fx or filters (not too important but nice to have)
Just wondering if there is going to be a chance to get the eternal fader in the nuo 2, seems like a missed chance for people who want the feel of the eternal fader. I like the looks of the nuo 3 but the extra channels could be a waste for me....
Yeah, I think the difficulty with something like Ableton is that there are about a million ways to set the program up - so trying to please everyone is difficult.
You could have individual outputs from Ableton going to channels 1,4,5 and then use all the MIDI controls for software bits and bobs whilst still having hardware eq and fader control on your 2 main mixing channels. Mmmmm. Would suit me nicely I think....
This is totally awesome. Suddenly the idea of incorporating MIDI into a DJ set becomes a lot more realistic to me, this is something i can see myself using.
Will there be a way to nudge the MIDI clock though?
Carbonfresh...i assume in that instance Ecler expect you to move to a HAK or whatever they're bringing out to replace the current HAKs. My friend just pointed out that the midi could also be used to control lights.....more amazing possibilities.
No Eternal in the NUO2. Remember that these NUOs are replacements for the lower end SMACs. There needs to be a clear gap between the NUOs, the HAKs and the scratch gear Ecler are working on.

New scratch gear from ecler? any sneak previews, info,.... ?
btw THat new SCLAT mixer looks like a very decent house mixer. It has a programmable (USB) effect module, cross fader adjustment (not too many 19" high -end club mixer have this feature at this day; all types of in- & outputs....It just seems to me like this is a piece of quality.
Yes, the SCLAT is a serious piece of hardware. I've had one in my possession a while ago, and it was the most impressive peice of gear I've ever played on! The thing weighs like 30 lbs, the sheet metal on that thing feels like its 14 ga. and those 100mm ALPS faders feel AMAZING!
As for the NUO2, like Gizmo said, it is mainly a replacement for the old SMAC PRO20, so no ETERNAL fader for it.
Be prepared for a few more surprises from ECLER later this year

Surprised? I don't think so...
well, not a surprise for YOU

plz post the rest of the videos gizmo!

The only thing Ecler could suprise me with is a mixer that broke after 5 mins which is a road they will not go down.
I owned a Ecler mixer in the past and would buy one in the future with out a second thought. I am still thinking of the Nuo3 as a back up mixer and an option in the future so that i could add CD decks to my setup if i want to.
The new SCLAT is like the old one but adds the effect section out of the Nuo5.
can the Nuo4 nudge the midi clock? its a very important issue for those wishing to use Ableton Live as a DJ tool.
there is a lot of people that seems happy with ecler...i just broke my THIRD eternal fader in almost three years...

i am lucky that they substitute them for free...it is under warranty...anyone had this problem???
well i cut alot every day and i never fuck up my faders;
dunno some people just fuck their faders up alot faster then others...
as far as i know there was a problem with the first eternal fader series but that had been fixed with the next version...
nice im getting it

so when does this come out in the usa i want one 4 ch and my rane ttm 56 side by side

Should hit our shores in about a month
thanks mate do u know how ,uch its going for ?
My guess is close to $800 USD. ^_^
Whoa. $800 will require some saving, but that's an incredible deal. And as for Ableton and everyone's different ways of working . . . if this will send MIDI, I think it will make sense to a LOT of Ableton users. You could configure your own preferences on the Live side by building templates, etc.
Am I correct to assume those MIDI switches let you switch between control surface mode and analog mixer mode, or did I miss something?
Well, the center "channel" is all MIDI....you can reprogram the buttons/knobs (the knobs are all push/infinite turn) to suit whatever software/hardware you want, and it will include a software to allow you to print new templates (that grey part).
Channels 2-3 can be switched from normal audio mode to MIDI mode, where the EQ knobs and the faders will act as MIDI controllers.....I assume for stuff like Ableton or other DJ software.
the only problem with Ableton for DJ use is that the EQ faders are set at 3-4 o' clock and not at noon like the traditional mixers. So basically you need a lot of training just to use the EQ's.
too bad for that one.
So will anyone know if you can nudge the tempo?
Not sure about that...maybe you can set up one of the knobs to "nudge". But there is a TAP tempo button on the NUO4.....
